How Much Does Permanent Makeup Cost in Edmonton?

The experience of your permanent makeup artist will play a big factor in how much it will cost. A master artist can charge upwards of $100 or more compared to a senior artist.

External Affairs was spearheaded by Becky Wilkins, a registered nurse and esthetician, and had humble beginnings as a small clinic and hair salon in Edmonton.

Today, Wilkins is the Clinical Director and VP of Medical Operations for External Affairs Medical Spas, which has a second branch in St. Albert.

We like this clinic because their line of color pigments for permanent makeup applications is all proudly Canadian-made, mixed uniquely for each patient to match their skin tone. External Affairs covers all areas of cosmetic tattooing too, namely permanent eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip liners.

However, despite their skilled estheticians, they don’t have a master artist with extensive experience in micropigmentation. While their technicians have received ample training, some clients might prefer more experienced cosmetic tattoo artists, especially for a $750 procedure.

Despite this, all of External Affairs’ technicians are certified and undergo an apprenticeship in-house before they can apply permanent makeup on clients. They’re educated on PHI standards, which aim for the most natural look that’s best suited for the measurements of your face.

Their defined eyebrow look is achieved with a rotary pen device that’s loaded with coarsely ground pigments into a single-use cartridge. The color is then imprinted into your dermis at about 18mm deep for a lasting look.

Unfortunately, they only do micropigmentation via rotary machine and don’t offer microblading. However, it’s equally effective and is perhaps even safer than other trending techniques.

The procedure at their clinic takes around three hours but will depend on your chosen treatment. You’ll undergo a thorough consultation before the technicians will apply the desired permanent makeup design, to ensure that you both agree on the final look.

Pros

  • Uses Canadian color pigments instead of ink
  • Offers a wide array of skincare treatments

Cons

  • No microblading
  • Does not offer lip lining or tint
  • Expensive compared to other clinics

Customer Reviews

Ashley Rezansoff, a client, was looking for the right eyebrow specialist and found it in External Affairs. She writes:

“I LOVE Alyssa! I have spent years searching for an eyebrow magician and she is just that, legit the best!!! All the staff that I have encountered are soo great and friendly and I highly recommend making this your go-to spa!”

Marilyn Der, another client, had eyeliner and her eyebrows done and was pleased with the results. She shares:

“Thank you Otilia!! I am loving the wonderful work Otilia did on my permanent eyeliner and eyebrows.  Otilia took the time to listen to what I wanted and took the time to explain everything to me while making it comfortable during the procedure.  I had permanent eyebrows done years ago which needed color correcting as the colors had changed to unnatural colors, and with Otila’s expertise, they are now a natural color.  I could not be happier.  Nobody can give a greater gift then the the gift of making somebody feel good about themselves, and Otilia has definitely given that to me.  I can’t thank Otilia enough. Otilia puts so much passion in her work, it’s amazing. Highly recommended if anybody is thinking of getting permanent make up.”

Brow Envy is one of Edmonton’s acclaimed makeup studios and uses the most current techniques and ink. With thousands of happy clients served, they have performed a variety of procedures, which include removal and corrections.

Striving to stay true to both the art and the science of permanent makeup, Brow Envy isn’t afraid to refuse clients who want procedures that are too bold or unnatural (which the company’s experts fear those clients may regret later on).

One of their premier services is microblading, which can help add volume to your current eyebrows to make them look fuller. This is achieved by creating hair-like strokes on your skin to add volume and depth but it isn’t suitable for those with sensitive skin.

Powder brows, on the other hand, is another popular service at Brow Envy and is suited for most skin types. Using more current techniques to introduce pigment into your skin, the final look is a softer powdery finish that looks more like naturally applied makeup.

A yearly touch-up is necessary for either brow procedure before it starts to fade and you’ll want to make sure you remember your appointment. If your brows go beyond a 50% fade or haven’t been retouched in two years, Brow Envy will consider it as a full procedure and charge you the full price.

Now, if you’re not ready to commit to microblading just yet, they provide a new procedure called brow lamination. This quick treatment can define the shape of your eyebrows in less than half an hour with a mild perming solution and lasts up to two months.

If you struggle to put on eyeliner, getting a permanent solution is probably best for you. Brow Envy offers various looks to suit your preferences, namely a classic eyeliner look, wings, shadows, and smokey liners, just to name a few.

Brow Envy can also give your lips a permanent color or define their shape with their blush, dark lip correction, and lip liner services. The best part is that they’ll last up to 5 years before needing a touchup.

Pros

  • Offers brow lamination for those who don’t want permanent makeup
  • Owner and artist Genée has a medical background

Cons

  • Charges full price for faded eyebrows
  • Operating hours is by appointment only

Customer Reviews

Ashley Amson went in for a powdered brow service and was impressed by the professionalism and aftercare service she received. This is her story:

“Genee provided a powdered brow service and did not disappoint. She was very thorough with the process and most importantly the aftercare. She walked me through everything before proceeding and was very meticulous with her work. She checked several times to ensure my brows were perfect before starting her work, which was flawless. This is the first powdered brow I’ve done and I am happy with Genee’s work, professionalism, and kindness….Would highly recommend seeing Genee for your eyebrow needs!”

Maria Burke, another client, also shares her experience:

“First time doing powder brows and wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out. So I booked with Genee knowing she has great reviews from her clients. Turns out she is absolutely more amazing than I thought. She picked the right service, the right ink, and the right brow design. It was the best investment I’ve made. My brows look natural and I never have to do them especially after showering. Saves a lot of time in my days. I highly recommend Genee!”

Brownude has received multiple awards for its permanent makeup services, leading the industry with its micropigmentation procedures. They’re also an academy that trains future aestheticians and beauticians,   fully licensed and inspected by Alberta Health.

This company is led by Thuy, who has over 7 years of experience tattooing and 15 years in the beauty industry. She has received over 30 certifications and performing over 6,000 procedures in her career.

Additionally, she has created her customized look on powdered ombre eyebrows that have earned her awards and recognitions since 2019.

Brownude offers three eyebrow treatments here, namely hairstroke, powdered ombre, and a combination of the two.

Hairstroke eyebrows are achieved either by machine micropigmentation or microblading, which will depend on the artist performing your procedure. They’ll imprint pigments on your skin that imitate your eyebrows for a more natural and enhanced look.

Powdered ombre eyebrows, on the other hand, are only done via machine micropigmentation, but will have a softer finish and a natural gradient that fades towards the tail of your brows. For a more defined shape or softer look, you can choose from either a soft, medium or bold intensity.

Brownude can also touch up your lips with a natural tint and define their shape, although this is not one of their specialities. They also do eyeliners with various styles such as a lash line, wing, and smoky, among others.

One of their unique procedures is scalp micropigmentation wherein they embed numerous microdots to imitate hair follicles. Although this procedure is more common for men, it can suit women who want to hide scars or balding areas.

Unlike other clinics, Brownude offers cosmetic tattoo removal by lightening the pigments with a lifting saline solution, which is safer and minimally invasive. This is only available for eyebrows and eyeliner, but will correct any previous permanent makeup work done with at least 4-6 sessions.

We also like Brownude because they carry both organic and inorganic semi-permanent pigments that are guaranteed to be safe for use.

Pros

  • Offers minimally invasive cosmetic tattoo removal
  • Multi-awarded owner known for powdered ombre eyebrow procedure
  • Provides cosmetic tattoo removal services

Cons

  • May not directly receive the expertise or services of the owner
  • Only open during weekdays

Glo Skin & Medspa offers a wide range of services that include permanent makeup, laser resurfacing, manicures, Botox, and massages. If you’re searching for a clinic where you can get medical treatment and pamper yourself at the same time, this is the place.

Although Glo Skin & Medspa specializes more in the application of dermal fillers, they also offer a range of other services including chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, and standard nail care packages.

When it comes to their permanent makeup, they offer micropigmentation for eyebrows, lips, and the application of eyeliner. They have a special focus on eyebrows since they believe they’re the most noticeable feature of the face.

Their eyebrow specialist will first determine the best color and enhancements needed since no two clients are the same. After initial consultations, they’ll expertly apply a “feathering” technique to mimic hair strokes using the pigment best suited for your skin tone and face.

Take note though that micropigmentation is not the same as microblading, and Glo Skin & Medspa only offers the first treatment. The pigments used in the two procedures are different as well, so before you decide to go with this clinic, make sure you’re getting the service you’re looking for.

However, their micropigmentation treatments can last for 2-4 years before needing a touch-up, which is considerably longer than microblading.

For permanent eyeliner and lip liner, the same consultations and skin tone assessments will be performed to achieve the look and color that’s best for you.

Pros

  • Complimentary no-obligation consultations
  • Can perform multiple procedures at once but is subject to approval

Cons

  • Inconsistent operating hours
  • More known for basic spa packages and nail care

J Permanent Makeup (JPMU) centers its services on semi-permanent makeup and eyelash extensions. They are known in both Edmonton and Calgary for their eyeliner and lip tattooing services.

For their eyebrow procedures, you’ll have a choice between a master and senior artist, with the former charging a higher fee for their experience. If you can afford it, we think you should go with the master artist, especially if they’re available.

They offer three procedures at JPMU namely microblading, microshading, and combo brows.

If you want the most realistic-looking brows, you’ll want to get their combo brow treatment, which is a mix of both microblading and microshading. It gives a realistic 3D effect and has the appearance of a natural, fuller brow.

Take note that just like with other clinics, you’ll need an instant touch-up less than three months after your first procedure. However, they’ll only honor their touch-up rates for their own clients and will refuse work that has been done somewhere else.

Now if you’re getting a classic eyeliner design here, no consultation is necessary for the standard pigmentation procedure. However, if you’re after a winged look or other dramatic designs, a consultation is necessary to ensure that you and your artist agree on the final outcome.

JPMU also performs lip lines, full lips, freckles, and beauty marks, although they are more known for their eyebrow, eyeliner, and eyelash extension procedures.

We like JPMU because if you avail of more than two services at the same time you get 15% off of the price. For 3 simultaneous services, you get a 20% discount, and if you avail of up to 4 services in one sitting you get a massive 25% in savings.

Pros

  • Offers larger discounts the more simultaneous services you avail of
  • Can choose between master artist and senior artist

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Won’t touch up eyebrow work performed in another clinic

Customer Reviews

Keiko McPherson was pleased with every step of the process in getting her microblading performed. She shares:

“Julia is amazing! From the consultation to the actual microblading appointment, she did a fantastic job. The facility is clean, staff professional and final out is better than I could have ever expected. Would 100% recommend!”

Carlyn Dropko, another client, also had the same service done, as she writes:

“I had my eyebrows microbladed by Alice and she did a fantastic job! She provided excellent service and was very accommodating to my needs! My eyebrows look beautiful! Would definitely recommend!”
