Everything You Need To Know About Louise McKinney Riverfront Park

guide-to-louise-mckinney-riverfront-park

If you ask locals where to get the best shot of the Edmonton skyline, they’ll likely send you straight to Louise McKinney Riverfront Park.

Naturally, I made the trek myself to catch the perfect sunset shot—and, of course,  walked right into a wedding photoshoot. The photographer wasn’t impressed, but hey, my dog made it into their album. Classic Edmonton moment.

What makes this spot so popular—besides the killer skyline views—is that it feels like a slice of wilderness right in the heart of the city.

Not sure where to start or what’s actually worth seeing down there? Don’t worry—we’ve got the full lowdown on how to actually enjoy it.

Where is the Louise McKinney Riverfront Park?

Louise McKinney Riverfront Park is located at 9999 Grierson Hill NW in Edmonton, Alberta. It sits along the North Saskatchewan River, right at the eastern edge of downtown and near the Low Level Bridge and Cloverdale Footbridge.

How to get to the Louise McKinney Riverfront Park?

Closest subway stop: For public transit, take the LRT to Bay/Enterprise Square Station. Get off at the 95 Street NW stop, then walk down 95 Street and turn left onto Grierson Hill Road.

Closest bus stops: Several ETS bus routes stop along Jasper Avenue and 97 Avenue, both just a short walk from the park.

The park is also accessible by foot or bike via the city’s river valley trail network.

What to Do and See at the Louise McKinney Riverfront Park

Explore the Chinese Garden Pavilion

Media from mirapearl

The Chinese Garden Pavilion is a peaceful, hidden spot off the main path. Last fall, the changing leaves added to the serene atmosphere, and the bright red pavilion contrasted beautifully with the trees and river.

The pavilion (a gift from Harbin, China) symbolizes the connection between the two cities.

It’s a great place to sit back and take in the river and city views. The large archway at the entrance is great for photos.

Stroll the Riverfront Promenade

If you haven’t walked the Riverfront Promenade yet, you’re missing out. It’s honestly one of the best ways to soak up Edmonton’s river valley.

I brought a friend there last summer for a quick loop, but we ended up wandering for over an hour. The paved path runs along the river with skyline views, tree-lined stretches, and lookout points for quick breaks.

One of my favorite parts is passing by the dock, where you can sometimes spot kayakers heading out. There’s also a long set of stairs if you feel like getting your heart rate up—great if you’re sneaking in some cardio without meaning to.

Rent bikes or try a Segway tour from River Valley Adventure Co.

If you’re looking for a new way to see the city, renting bikes or hopping on a Segway tour at River Valley Adventure Co. is definitely worth it.

I tried a bike rental last summer along the river, and it was a great way to cover a lot of ground without breaking a sweat. The city’s trails are easy to follow, and you can get to spots you might miss on foot.

If you’re feeling adventurous, Segway tours are a fun way to zip through the park and downtown. I had no experience, but after a quick tutorial, I was cruising around like a pro. It’s easier than I thought and way more fun.

Attend outdoor events

Every summer, I try to catch at least one outdoor event in Edmonton. Last year, I went to Disco in the Park with some friends — dancing outside made it a summer highlight.

We grabbed snacks from food trucks, checked out street performances, and explored the festival at our own pace. Outdoor events like this are a great way to relax, enjoy the city, and spend time with friends.

Alchemy Bar is one of those places you only hear about through a friend of a friend. It’s tucked away in the JW Marriott, and the vibe is all moody lighting and comfy couches—super easy to settle in for the night.

I tried their smoked old-fashioned, and watching them torch the glass was half the fun. The drinks are fancy without being fussy, and the small plates (especially the truffle fries) hit the spot if you’re looking to snack.

Come summer, you’ll want to head straight to the rooftop—killer cocktails and a view that’s basically made for photos.

Blowers & Grafton is my go-to when I’m craving a big, messy Donair. The East Coast vibe hits as soon as you walk in, and it’s super relaxed.

I tried the Donair on my first visit—sweet sauce, soft pita, and just the right amount of grease to feel indulgent without being too much.

My friend and I also split an order of garlic fingers, and we couldn’t stop talking about them. Honestly, I’d go back just for those.

Rocky Mountain Icehouse is one of my go-to spots when I’m in the mood for good comfort food. The last time I was there, I had their brisket sandwich and it was really good. It was smoky, tender, and served with crispy fries.

Their beer selection is solid too, especially if you’re into local brews. I tried one of their Edmonton craft beers on tap, and it was the perfect pairing with my sandwich.

The atmosphere is chill, with a mix of rustic and cozy which makes it easy to settle in. It’s a great spot for a low-key night out with some seriously good food.

I popped into Jacek Chocolate Couture recently and was immediately drawn in by their beautiful display of chocolates.

After grabbing a few truffles, I was impressed by how spot-on the flavor combinations were—like the rich hazelnut paired with a touch of sea salt.

Each piece felt carefully crafted and balanced, not too sweet or overwhelming, showing how much care they put into details. They really know how to make chocolates that stand out.

It’s my go-to spot when I’m craving something unique or need a gift for someone who appreciates good chocolate.
