Last month, I decided to build a custom standing desk—complete with adjustable legs, cable management, and a built-in charging station. Everything was going smoothly until I plugged in my drill and…nothing. It was completely dead.
No big deal, I thought. I’d just grab a new one. But the first shop didn’t have the model I wanted, while the second had zero helpful staff. I finally found it at a third store, way across the city—after burning half a day driving around Edmonton just to buy one tool.
That’s when I realized I couldn’t keep wasting hours bouncing between stores every time a project hit a snag. So I started asking around, reading reviews, and visiting stores myself.
Here are the hardware stores in Edmonton that stood out during my search.
1. Lee Valley Tools

| OPERATING HOURS | Monday to Friday: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Saturday to Sunday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
Lee Valley Tools has been around since 1978, starting off with something as simple as a barrel-stove kit.
The store focuses on woodworking tools, hardware, and gardening gear with quality that appeals to dedicated DIYers.
The Edmonton store reflects that pretty well. It’s practical and straightforward, with a solid mix of everyday items and more specialized tools.
What I noticed right away was how easy it is to get around. The hardware section is especially well laid out, with everything from modern cabinet handles to more niche pieces like hand-forged nails and drawer slides.
They’ve also got an express pick-up service that I found useful for those in a rush. You place an order online, pull up outside, and they bring it to your car—simple enough.
Their 90-day return policy stood out too. It gives people a bit of breathing room, and it doesn’t seem like something they make complicated, which is always good to see.
If there’s a downside, it’s probably the pricing. The quality is undeniable—especially with their in-house Veritas tools—but if you’re used to big-box store prices, it might take a minute to adjust.
Efficient hybrid shopping
“Lee valley is my go-to place for hard-to-find tools and hardware. They use a catalog-order model even on site so don’t expect aisles of merchandise; most items are on display but you only carry them from the till to your car really.
If you like their stuff, I also strongly recommend using their website; it’s a great tool for building your list in advance and they have a few computer terminals in the store so you can finalize your order after inspecting the items you want to buy in person.
It’s the best hybrid of online and in-person shopping I’ve experienced.”

Excellent customer service
“Brilliant store for high quality woodworking, gardening tools or hardware. The employees are a pleasure to deal with. Customer service is great as well if you need any support with products. I visit every week just to walk around the store. I purchased a big item from them recently and they made exceptions to get it delivered the next day, one staff member even stayed beyond her shift waiting for me to get to the store to help me out.”

2. Richelieu Hardware Ltd.

Richelieu Hardware Ltd. isn’t the most well-known name for everyday shoppers, but a lot of tradespeople rely on it for a good reason.
I visited with a friend who runs a small woodworking business, and we were both surprised by how extensive the selection was. From decorative knobs to industrial hardware, usually special-ordered elsewhere, they had it all organized and ready to go.
We got a quick demo of their website tools and honestly, it made ordering way simpler. Everything from specs to stock levels was right there.
My friend went ahead with a decent-sized order, and that’s where Richelieu’s logistics stood out. Most of it arrived within a day—no delays, no extra coordination.
With 113 distribution centres across North America, including 50 in Canada alone, it’s clear they’ve built their system for speed and efficiency.
They also had a schedule of in-store workshops and demos, which looked pretty useful. If you’re in the trades, getting to try things out and learn from pros can be just as useful as finding the right parts.
That said, prices here are on the higher side. It makes sense if you need fast delivery and solid quality, but it might be a stretch for smaller projects.
Efficient, and easy pick up process
“Paul, Ray of Sunshine (older than dinosaurs, but younger than the sun), and the crew that support and run the warehouse are awesome. I am always greeted with cheer and they always have the product(s) I need to pick up (I run pickup on behalf of Delton Cabinets and there is a PO setup in advance for all orders made to Richelieu — makes it easy for everyone). Tons of parking space for customer pickup at the rear of the building. No idea what the front staff are like, as I deal with the awesome staff in the warehouse (yes, this rear is good. Thanks Paul).

3. KMS Tools & Equipment

| Title | Info |

| OPERATING HOURS | Monday to Friday: 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Sunday: Closed |
KMS Tools doesn’t feel like a typical big-box hardware store, and that’s part of the appeal.
Their range is massive, with a clear focus on specialized areas like metalwork, auto repair, and industrial gear. It’s not simply the size of the selection—it’s the level of detail in every tool category that caught my attention.
In the welding section alone, there were different torch types, specialty gloves, and gear for setups. Same with the auto tools—diagnostic scanners, brake bleeder kits, and other niche add-ons you don’t usually see in general hardware stores.
What I also noticed was how hands-on the staff were. They were actively helping customers with real, specific needs, which gave the stores a more personal, service-driven feel.
I was also struck by the amount of pro-level gear they carry. Chances are, you’ll spot tolls that aren’t easy to find elsewhere.
Plus, the membership discounts can make the price even more appealing.
The downside? It’s easy to get lost in the variety if you’re not experienced. For someone just starting, the store might feel more intimidating than helpful at first.
Fast, knowledgeable service
“Assistance from staff was quick and readily available and knowledgeable.
I showed up with a very specific wantlist from a sales flyer and was provided same in scant minutes. Top marks.”

Great prices and convenient service
“Wish I’d of known about KMS when I got started buying tools. Best prices and great service. I live in Fort McMurray so it was convenient that I was able to email a list of tools and have my brother pick them up for me during their three day sale.”

4. RONA Edmonton

| Title | Info |

| WEBSITE | https://www.rona.ca/en |
| ADDRESS | 9115 51‑st Avenue NW |
| CONTACT DETAILS | (780) 438‑0006 |
| OPERATING HOURS | Monday–Friday: 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Saturday: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM Sunday: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM |
RONA feels a bit different from some of the more commercial hardware stores around the city.
I stopped by recently to help a relative compare some flooring options and ended up exploring more of the store than I expected.
The space was easy to navigate, and what stood out right away was the mix of products—everything from power tools to home decor.
While browsing, I noticed a few in-store services in action. Someone was getting plywood cut to size at the cutting station, and nearby, a staff member was assisting with key duplication.
The team seemed comfortable juggling both contractor-level requests and everyday walk-ins.
There’s also a dedicated Contractor Desk, which made sense given the number of tradespeople I saw coming in. RONA clearly caters to both professionals and homeowners tackling projects on their own.
Their focus on locally made items stood out. I saw several signs pointing out Canadian brands and overheard one of the employees giving a pretty thoughtful explanation of the “Well Made Here” tag. The way they presented it felt sincere.
The only downside during my visit was the checkout line. While the staff were friendly, it did feel a bit understaffed, and getting through the line took longer than expected.
Outstanding service and knowledgeable staff
“Best Rona to go to! I came here one day a couple years ago to pick up an online order. The service was great. Fast forward to this summer, I drove all the way from the west end to this Rona on the south side, because of the phenomenal service I have had in the past. The service, the people, the attention to details are as it has always been every time I go here … AMAZING!!! The people are professional, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. I let everyone know if you have a project, go to this RONA, and go see John H! He took our deck plans, ordered all our materials for us, and even explained how to use some of the materials. We built a 700 + sq ft deck on our own (with no experience) and it is wonderful! Every time we need something for our projects, the people were so helpful and charming, even at 7 am.
GO TO THIS RONA!!!! I feel so happy and confident with my purchases. The people here make my shopping experience such a positive one.
10/10!!!!

5. Spec Hardware

| Title | Info |

| ADDRESS | 18819 111 Avenue NW |
| CONTACT DETAILS | (780) 966‑9066 |
| OPERATING HOURS | Monday and Sunday: Closed
Tuesday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM |
I came across Spec Hardware while helping a friend source new cabinet hardware for a kitchen project, and it quickly became clear this place caters to a very specific kind of customer—one who’s looking for quality, not quantity.
Spec’s strength lies in its focus on customization. They source from international makers, making it possible to match fixtures to a home’s exact design vision.
I like that the space feels more like a design studio than a typical store. The layout encourages you to browse freely and get a feel for the materials, which really helps when you’re trying to match a specific look.
Their selection is tight but well-considered. You won’t see endless brand names, but what’s available is clearly chosen with care. A lot of the pieces come from respected international makers and are built to last.
You’ll also find thoughtful extras here—designer house numbers, decorative registers, and even upscale doorbells. They care about every detail.
The only drawback is availability. Since it’s a boutique setup, some items need to be ordered, which could slow things down if you’re working on a tight deadline.
Top-quality hardware and expert guidance
“I recently purchased hardware for my home renovation at Spec Hardware and had an excellent experience with Raman. Her professionalism and expertise were evident as she guided me in selecting high-quality products tailored to my needs. The variety of hardware available was impressive, and the quality of the items exceeded my expectations. Raman’s attentive service and valuable installation tips made the entire process seamless. I highly recommend Spec Hardware for anyone seeking top-notch products and exceptional customer service!”

Knowledgeable staff and responsive service
“Our experience with Spec Hardware has been fantastic. As a residential home owner, we have been rather discouraged with the options available to us–both in the big box stores and the specialty stores. Shopping at Spec Hardware was an immense relief! Their staff are very knowlegable about their product lines, and they were able to help us quickly narrow down our choices for the variety of items we needed. They have been quickly repsonsive with both phone calls and emails, and clearly answering our questions. We are now just awaiting delivery of our beautiful exterior entry sets, house numbers, and ALL the varied hardware for our new kitchen. Thank-you Spec Hardware!”
