guide-to-manchester-square

Not going to lie—searching for new places to check out in Edmonton feels like more work than it’s worth. I’d had Manchester Square on my list forever but kept pushing it aside. Then the first lazy Saturday of the season came around, and I thought, why not?

I wasn’t expecting much, but Manchester Square totally delivered—local shops to explore, picturesque European-style buildings, and enough unexpected art to fill an entire Instagram feed.

It’s a refreshing change from the usual mall or downtown spots, offering a much more relaxed vibe. If you’ve been curious about what’s actually there, keep reading to get the full lowdown before you go.

Where is Manchester Square?

Manchester Square is in Edmonton, Alberta. It’s located on 120 Street near 107 Avenue, just northwest of downtown, in the Queen Mary Park neighborhood.

How to get to Manchester Square?

  • Closest subway stop: From downtown Edmonton, head west on 104 Avenue, then turn right onto 121 Street. Continue north and turn onto 107 Avenue—Manchester Avenue will be on your right at 120 Street.

What to Do and See at the Manchester Square

Explore art murals and unique architectural designs

Media from alixandrajade

Manchester Square is packed with murals. Some are super bold with bright colors and sharp lines, while others are more faded and moody, with softer designs.

There’s the Floral Mural which stood out to me because of its intricate design—the way the shapes flow together, it almost looks like the flowers are coming to life as you walk past.

Another one that caught my eye is the Lady of Manchester Mural. I liked how the mural was painted in a trick-of-the-eye abstract style. From afar, a woman’s face, peonies, and butterflies come into focus.

A lot of the pieces are painted right onto the brick walls, so the texture gives them this gritty look that makes them feel part of the buildings. It’s cool because no matter how many times you go, you catch new details you missed before.

Snap photos of the vibrant European-style buildings

Manchester Square’s architecture has a European charm that catches you off guard in Edmonton. With brick facades, arched windows, and balconies, it feels like you’ve just walked into a quaint corner of Europe.

The colors are what really pull you in—lots of warm reds, deep greens, and soft yellows that pop, especially on sunny days.

When I went, I couldn’t stop taking photos. Even the small details, like the old-fashioned street lamps and decorative trim around the windows, were too good to pass up. There’s this one building with a bright blue door that makes for the best backdrop.

Shop at local boutiques and specialty stores

The boutiques at Manchester Square aren’t your typical chain stores—you’ll find chain spots selling handmade jewelry, vintage clothes, and home goods you didn’t know you needed.

One of our favorite finds was a shop with handmade candles and soaps. Afterwards, my friend found a vintage denim jacket that looked brand new at a nearby store.

You’ll also find a shop with unique tees and international snacks. What we really love is how personal everything feels. The owners are always around to chat, making it way more relaxed than a mall.

Good to know: Best for creative breakfast sandwiches

If you’re craving a sandwich that’s a bit more than your usual grab-and-go, Western Sandwich Company hits the spot. The place is simple and laid-back, but the sandwiches are seriously something else—big, fresh, and stacked with good stuff.

I tried the Western Classic with smoked brisket, and it was legit tender and full of flavor without being overloaded. One of my friends went for the fried chicken sandwich and couldn’t stop talking about how crispy it was.

They’ve also got sides like crunchy coleslaw and thick-cut fries that actually taste like potatoes, not freezer-burn.

Good to know: Best for cozy brunches, craft cocktails, and a relaxed vibe

Website

Rhubarb Cafe & Cocktails feels like one of those spots you randomly stumble on and then immediately want to tell everyone about. It’s part cozy café, part low-key cocktail bar, which makes it work whether you’re grabbing brunch or settling in for a nightcap.

We dropped by for brunch and left pretty impressed. The eggs Benny came out with a perfectly poached egg and hollandaise sauce that wasn’t too heavy. The rhubarb compote on the side added a really nice touch (kind of their thing, obviously).

Their cocktails are just as good as their food. The rhubarb gin fizz is an easy favorite, super refreshing without being overly sweet.

Sugarbowl is one of those Edmonton spots that’s been around forever, and once you try it, you’ll get why. It’s got a cozy, laid-back vibe that works whether you’re grabbing brunch with friends or just need a solid coffee and a quiet corner.

We went for brunch and really loved their famous cinnamon bun. It was massive, gooey, and perfect for sharing (or not, no judgment). The chicken and waffles were another hit: crispy, juicy, and balanced with just the right amount of syrup.

They’ve also got a strong craft beer lineup if you’re stopping in later in the day, with a mix of local and international picks.
