If every step makes you wince or you can no longer stand without cursing, it’s definitely time to ring an orthopedic specialist (or swing by these massage parlours).
I’ve been through that limping phase myself, so believe me, the pain won’t go away on its own.
But don’t worry, I got your aching back. Having wrangled with joint problems before means I already know which clinics in Edmonton house the best doctors.
All their names and specialties are discussed below, right down to the bone.
How much does a hip replacement surgery cost in Canada?
In Canada, a hip replacement surgery usually costs $20,000 to $30,000, though some private clinics in provinces like Alberta charge $34,000 or more.
As for consultations, initial meetings with orthopedic specialists are often priced at $450 to $500.
Orthopedic Surgery Centre

Address: 10969 102 St NW
Contact Details: +1 780-735-8120
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri: 6:30 am to 9 am
- Sat to Sun: 6:30 am to 10 am
For knee and hip replacements, the Orthopedic Surgery Centre of Alberta Health Services is worth considering.
Sticking to timelines is one of its strongest points. Most patients we interviewed had been discharged within 24 hours, which is a telling sign of effective pain management.
A lot of good words were said about the medical staff too, with several praising the non-transactional care and attentiveness. It’s also good to know that regular check-ins continue post-surgery.
Another perk is the availability of in-house physiotherapists. With them around, looking for or paying for care at a different centre isn’t really needed (though we still suggest checking these proven options for a second opinion).
Just keep in mind that admission can be a mixed experience. While some patients had a stress-free experience checking in, others moaned about the long wait times.
The centre’s food also splits opinions. Not everyone is a fan, though a handful found the meals uplifting and properly presented.
Terrific Surgeon
I had hip replacements on January 10, 2025 and May 30, 2025. The care I received from every person starting at the front desk and continuing with all the medical personnel was 5 star. Dr. Stiegelmar is a terrific surgeon and I am so happy with both surgeries.

Alberta Surgical Group

Address: 2515 103A St SW
Contact Details: +1 780-229-2533
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 6:45 am to 5 pm
- Sat – 9 am to 3 pm
The physician-driven Alberta Surgical Group has a stellar record in hip and knee replacements, as well as adhering to timelines.
If you look at their surgical team, it’s easy to see why. Every specialist is active in Alberta’s public health system, meaning the medical staff holds updated licenses.
Dr Durand, Dr Ekert, and Dr Manolescu are especially rated well. They’ve treated serious cases like meniscus and labral tears, and from what we heard, there’s rarely a fault with their bedside manners.
Operating in clean, state-of-the-art facilities further boosts their appeal. The centre has five ORs for major/minor surgeries, plus the recovery room’s air system comes with infection control tech.
It’s also quite accessible, being close to major highways and only a 26-minute drive from the Edmonton CBD.
Sadly, you can’t pop by on Sundays, unlike the first entry, and complaints were made about some nurses acting dismissively.
The Best Places to Go
I absolutely recommend this place. If you are anywhere in Alberta, this is the place to go. A little backstory: my family member was on a waitlist at the Grande Prairie Hospital since 2017—they kept being told “3 year wait,” and every three years nothing changed. After years of chasing admins, directors, doctors, and even the health minister, someone finally transferred his file to the Alberta Surgical Group in Edmonton. Within 6 months, he received more care than nearly a decade of waiting at Grande Prairie. What a world of difference! His doctor (Dr Congdon) and all the staff at ASG were wonderful, caring, and professional. After his hip replacement, he was able to walk again, with perfect recovery and aftercare—his quality of life restored entirely thanks to ASG.

Everyone there was fantastic
My husband had a total knee replacement. From the greeting at the door when we first got there, to leaving after his surgery, our experience was awesome! ALL the staff were wonderful. I’m sorry we didn’t get or can’t remember his nurse’s name, but she was fantastic. Everyone there was fantastic, and the facility was amazing. Thank you everyone at Alberta Surgical Centre.

Acumen Clinic Edmonton

Address: 15358 111 Ave NW
Contact Details: +1 587-599-5345
Operating Hours: Mon to Fri: 9 am to 4 pm
In terms of services, Acumen Clinic might be the most comprehensive on this list. We say that because they provide orthopedic surgeries and reconditioning programs under one roof.
Specialty-wise, treating hand, knee, elbow, hip, wrist, and shoulder injuries is what they do best. The sporty clientele makes that obvious.
One catch, though, is the lack of operations on Saturdays and Sundays. Better free up a weekday if you’re planning to visit.
The bigger snag? Their procedures aren’t budget-friendly, and that applies even to the consultation fees.
To be fair, the splurge won’t go to waste. Acumen’s specialists, like Dr Shantz and Dr Snider, are trained internationally and award-winning.
What’s more, they don’t require referrals, and the consultation fees already cover every follow-up visit. That means you don’t have to pay extra to see their surgeons again.
We can’t forget about the treatment plans either; they sort out the entire journey.
I would recommend Acumen to anyone looking for therapy
Nina has been a big part of my daughter’s recovery after ACL surgery. My daughter is 16 but really enjoys her time spent at Acumen. She still needs time but I would recommend Acumen to anyone looking for therapy.

Very Competent
We can’t say enough great things about the therapists and trainers at Acumen. Our 13-year-old daughter trains there for volleyball, and her vertical has improved so much in such a short time. The Acumen team provides the perfect balance of challenge—pushing her physically and mentally while still keeping it enjoyable. The staff clearly love what they do and work together seamlessly to support each athlete. The app they use also helps keep athletes motivated to continue training at home, which is a bonus. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun atmosphere with very competent trainers!

Edmonton Bone and Joint Centre

Address: 9499 137 Ave NW
Contact Details: +1 780-433-3155
Operating Hours: Mon to Fri – 8 am to 4 pm
You’ll get end-to-end solutions with the Edmonton Bone and Joint Centre. Both surgical and non-surgical care are offered here, and they have on-site therapists and kinesiologists ready to assist at any point of the surgical journey.
We love the team-based approach too. Each surgeon works with a specific medical assistant and nurse case manager, keeping things generally consistent and personalized.
The problem is, customer support leaves a lot to be desired. Unreturned calls and rude staff behaviour seem to be the most common gripes we heard.
You can’t get in right away either. For hip and knee treatments, the referral-to-surgery wait time is 70–85 weeks, while the one for shoulders takes 30–40 weeks.
At the very least, they’re transparent about it, free resources are provided (like pre-op video guides), and you can opt for virtual appointments. Just make sure to get your X-rays done first to avoid more delays.
My surgery went smoothly
I was in a walker for 3 years with my bad hip. After seeing Dr Carlos Panaro at the Bone and Joint Clinic, I got exceptional care—he’s articulate, compassionate, and explains everything beautifully. My surgery went smoothly, pain was well-managed, and within six weeks I ditched the walker and eventually the cane. The physio and staff were wonderful throughout. Highly recommend Dr Panaro for his compassionate, expert care.

A Very Good Experience
Met with Dr. Arnette today. We found him to be kind and respectful to my husband’s situation. The front staff were also very nice. It was a very good experience!

Dr Carlo Panaro

Address: 5966 Gateway Blvd NW
Contact Details: +1 780-481-5650
Dr Carlo Panaro, a former football pro, brings more than 10 years of experience to the operating table. Such longevity is reflected in his stellar hip, knee, shoulder, foot, and ankle surgery record.
Almost every patient we hit up reported improvements months after their operation. When we asked about post-op issues, the majority said there were none; even the scarring was barely noticeable.
We’ll have to be blunt, though: Dr Panaro’s bedside manner has been criticized, as he can come off as intimidating.
And unlike the previous entries, this one isn’t a centre housing five or more specialists and therapists. It’s a one-man grind, making wait times long.
On a positive note, he’s definitely not lacking in credentials, with Workers Compensation Board of Alberta and American Board of Independent Medical Examiners certifications.
His service list is just as loaded. General orthopedics, trauma treatments, sports medicine, and arthroscopy are all offered.
Amazing Job
I consider myself very fortunate to have had Dr Panaro as my surgeon. Four days ago, I had my right hip replacement done and Dr Panaro, based on how well I am doing, did an amazing job. I have very little, if any, swelling. I was able to get by on just the acetaminophen the day following the surgery. On day two, I did have to start taking the opioid, but I think it was because the previous night, I sat too long watching the extended Jay’s World Series finale.☹️ Other than that, I am doing way better than I thought I would be. The most painful thing is getting in and out of bed. I am able to, carefully, go up and down the stairs of my 2 storey house and could be quite self sufficient on my own though I do have help staying with me. My surgery experience with Dr Panaro and the team at Alberta Surgical Group was top notch. The surgery, for me, was a breeze; the hard part now is working through all the exercises to get back to normal. I have no qualms or concerns of getting my other hip done and I actually look forward to having it done when I’m able to.
Based on my experience, and what I heard others saying of their experiences, I would have to believe that Dr Panaro must be one of the finest orthopaedic surgeons in our area. I have complete confidence in him. I am a 66 yr old senior and am doing quite well following a full right hip replacement surgery. Thanks Dr Panaro and all your team!

There was no hip pain the next day
I had recent Hip Replacement Surgery, with Dr Carlos Panaro. I was blessed getting this particular Orthopaedic Surgeon! From the first Appointment with a Nurse, the Class. The Lovely, Elderly Gentleman, Semi Retired Surgeon, ladies in the phone, to Dr. Carlos Panaro the Surgeon that did my Surgery, it went smoothly. I was in a Walker for years, and I am a Senior. I had the pleasure of being a guest at his Surgical Clinic. My daughter was with me and we left together in the afternoon. I got up and my daughter was my Caretaker and stayed with me for 5 days. There was no Hip Pain the next day. I went from a Walker to a Cane in 6 weeks . It felt the most natural thing in the World. I found out from my GP of 35 years, Dr Tony Salopek, that my right knee needs to be replaced. I will be phoning them on Monday for another appt. My daughter is in the process of trying to have a baby, so I want to get it look after before I am a first time Grandmother!
Sincerely, Miss Joan Hauck
