One of the best things about being Canadian is that you get to enjoy the perks it gives to its residents. And this includes free check-ups with your health care insurance provider.
Whether you have a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or a Permanent Residency (PR), you are entitled to receive a valid health card from your province. This health card covers your routine visits to a doctor.
But if you are not a Canadian resident and you’re only visiting, these are the usual charges that you would typically incur on your visit. The actual prices may vary from this list:
|Doctor’s Office Visit||$60 to $100|
|Sick Note for Work or School||$35|
|Chart Copy||$25 and up|

“My family and I have been seeing Dr Fred for about 6 years and I have to say he is the best doctor we have been to, He is a keeper !! He is very knowledgable and takes the time out for his patients. 2. Dr. Amy Borkent – Family MDs Medical Center
|ADDRESS||101 9113 111 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5B 0C3|
|CONTACT DETAILS||Phone: (780) 474-3712 |
Email: [email protected]
|OPERATING HOURS||Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM |
Wednesdays & Fridays: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Dr. Amy Borkent is one of the three family physicians at an Edmonton clinic called Family MDs. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1986.
For years, the clinic stopped accepting new patients under their care. But just recently, Dr. Borkent announced that she is ready to start accepting new patients.
Apart from being an excellent doctor, Dr. Borkent can speak fluent Dutch. This gives her an edge over other doctors, especially to native Dutch speakers.
We also appreciate the fact that she does house calls. It really shows that Dr. Borkent is compassionate about her patients, many of whom have been working with her for at least 10 years.
If you’re interested in visiting their clinic, you can send them an inquiry or quote through their website. You can also call their hotline for quicker replies.
This is what her other patients commented:
“Dr. Borkent has been my doctor for many years now. Highly recommend and love the new space. Staff at the front are pleasant to deal with and is always available to answer any questions that i have. Wont go anywhere else!” – Newgen780
“I have been seeing dr borkent since 1996. She is amazing. She can be quite reserved, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t thinking hard about what you are saying. I have recently developed some unusual health conditions and she has been amazing in terms of trying to refer me to the right person to get diagnosed. I have definitely had to wait for her but I know that if she is running late it is for good reason. treat her with respect and you will get the same.”
“I am shocked by the negative comments about Dr. Borkent. I started to see her in 2018, after a fiasco of a Horrible Family Dr. who made many errors with me, leading to emergencies. Dr Borkent has been very thorough and we have gotten to the root of my medical conditions. Stating that she Googles Meds because she has no knowledge is a joke, right? If I were a prescribing Dr, I would want to make sure that I am giving the right Med and not contradicting with another med. Drs at the hospital carry around books with different pharmaceutical options, as reference when prescribing. She is extremely thorough, compassionate and caring. The ladies at the desk are awesome! Love this clinic and highly recommend!”
3. Dr. Moshurchak Kim – Allin Clinic
|ADDRESS||10155 120 St 2nd Floor, Edmonton, AB T5K 2A2|
|CONTACT DETAILS||Phone: (780) 482-7551|

In 1946, The Allin Clinic was started by a group of 3 physicians. A few years later, the clinic moved to its present location and has since then expanded its team to 50 physicians.
Dr. Kim is just one of the physicians in the clinic who specializes in family medicine. She is well-loved by her patients, particularly the teenagers.
It is rare to find a doctor who will take the time to get to know her patients. And this is what makes Dr. Kim a gem to her patients.
She listens carefully to her patients and makes sure they understand the different medical terms that may pop up during their consultation.
At the moment, they’re only accepting new patients by physician referral, general practice, or low-risk obstetrics. They’ve adopted this policy so that they can provide the best medical care to all of the patients in their care.
However, their policy changes on a regular basis, so it’s recommended that you contact the clinic to be informed of any policy changes. They also update their website frequently to let the public know of any changes in the policy.
Check out what other patients have to say about Dr. Kim:
“I have been following Kim around for years. Kim is thoughtful and caring and really listens to your problems. I never feel rushed. I always feel comfortable in her office and can talk to her about anything without judgement. My two young adult daughters see her as well and feel the same way.”
“I have been seeing Dr Moshurchak for almost 20 years. She is now also seeing my teenage children and they love her. She is kind and compassionate, willing to talk about not just my physical health. She makes a point to ask how things are going in my relationships and work which makes me feel comfortable that she is watching for mental health red flags also. She usually has appointments available, but if she is busy, her colleagues Dr Chan and Dr Young are amazing also. I feel very taken care of at the Links Clinic.”
“I have been seeing Dr. Moshurchak since I was a teenager and have followed her from West End to Downtown, to now the Links clinic. Kim and her assistant are great. Never wait too long. Never feel rushed. Very knowledgeable and listens well. My daughter now sees her as well.”

He also helped develop Medical Acupuncture for the University of Alberta.
As a doctor, he is able to conduct consultations related to any of his specializations. But he stands out as a family doctor and acupuncturist in Edmonton.
Note: Sadly, due to his busy schedule, Dr. Aung does not see new patients anymore. He has also stopped attending to physical consultations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But we are hoping that he will soon return to seeing patients once the health crisis becomes under control. After all, he is a treasured physician in Edmonton.
Here are some of the reviews that his patients have left behind:
“I’ve been seeing Dr Aung for over 20 years due to Acne. I tried many drug therapies prescribed by my doctors and dermatologists and nothing has been more effective than the treatments and herbal medication I’ve received from Dr Aung. He has even helped me with my borderline celiac condition. My husband sees him as well and has benefited from the acupuncture. Truly, we are blessed to have met him. My concern now is that he doesn’t take the time to care for his own health because his patients always come first. He’s such a lovely soul!! Busy place but worth the wait.”
“Dr. Aung is a compassionate, highly intelligent and intuitive doctor and I feel fortunate to have been able to have our daughter see him. He thoughtfully took the time to walk both my daughter and I through his thinking and approach. At 10 years old, she left commenting that he created a calmness that put her at ease and that she felt fully seen and heard. I am grateful for his compassion, knowledge and resilience to teach this knowledge so that it isn’t lost.”
“Dr Aung has been our acupuncturist for 25 years. He is a wonderful caring man who not only treats the individual but also the entire family. He is an intuitive healer. He has a worldview which brings his knowledge to the international stage while remaining humble. We are most grateful for him in our lives.”

Sundays & Evenings: Subject to doctor’s availability
Dr. Dena L. Stockburger is one of the best Edmonton doctors that practice family medicine. She is affiliated with the Nova Medical Clinic, where she works alongside with 9 other doctors.
The clinic first started under the name of Meadowbrook Medical Clinic in 2002. Ever since, it has grown largely to include a multifaceted medical team.
Since they are a teaching clinic, they work with the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine. In doing so, the doctors are able to share their knowledge to future doctors.
Most doctors don’t do consultations on evenings and on Sundays. But this is something that the Nova Medical Clinic can arrange, depending on the availability of their doctors.
They are also currently accepting new patients so if you still don’t have a family doctor, this is a good place to start. If you need the help of one of the doctors in the clinic, there is a quick online booking button on their website to make an appointment.

“Dr. Stockburger is my childhood doctor is honestly the best to talk about everything!”
“Very thorough. Excellent treatment received from her for close to 20 years. Highly recommended”
“The BEST doctor I have ever gone to. Listens, very compassionate, was wonderful when I was struggling with mental illness caused by stress. VERY thorough. Would highly recommend her to anyone seeking a new doctor.”
“I have been seeing Dr Stockburger for many years. She has an incredible memory and is very thorough. She has listened, noted, is very clear on side effects to expect with any medication, other options available for treatments and when necessary, will find a specialist. She doesn’t hesitate to do some pre-screening tests before the appointment to a specialist to hurry up a process. She has arranged for an immediate recall as soon as test results are in. I truly appreciate all she has done for me.”
Why You Need a Family Doctor
Have you ever wondered why people recommend having one family doctor to get in touch with during emergencies? Here are some of the reasons why we suggest the same thing:
They follow your life cycle
Family doctors practice general medicine. They can treat a wide range of conditions that you may experience.
They can work with toddlers, teenagers, middle-aged adults, and seniors. Because these doctors see the same patients for years or decades, you get to build a relationship with them.
And this means that they know your family history and have a background of the different conditions you’ve experienced in the past.
They know your family history
Having just one doctor for your entire family means that the doctor has a more accurate and in-depth knowledge of your family’s health history. He will get to know some of the red flags to look out for when you reach a certain age.
For example, your dad had diabetes at a certain age. Knowing this, your family doctor will make sure to monitor your blood glucose level to see that you don’t get the disease as well.
They help manage chronic conditions
Although you generally see a family doctor for a yearly check-up, they treat you more than you think. This is because they have a checklist of chronic conditions to keep an eye out for.
You don’t need to go to a specialist right away once you feel something is wrong. Instead, you can visit your family doctor and get the consultation you need.
And when your family doctor decides it’s time to see a specialist, he will be able to refer you to someone he trusts.
They help lessen your visits to the hospital
Instead of heading straight to the emergency room, you can get in touch with your family doctor first. He is capable of giving you the right diagnosis after a consultation with him.
This is because he already has your record on file. He can assess what’s wrong with you by looking at the records and seeing if there is a pattern for a chronic condition that he needs to monitor.
