Burnco Landscape Centre was established in 1987 with the mission to create a one-stop shop for landscaping materials. Offering its services to both contractors and individual customers, this fourth-generation family business now has sixty locations around North America.

Each store provides a wide array of materials that you can choose from such as decorative rock, paving stones, retaining walls, just to name a few. They also carry raw materials like sand gravel, soil, and firewood as well as other tools for your landscaping needs.

Visiting their locations treats you to their outdoor displays, which is essentially a showroom that demonstrates the applications of their products in different scenarios. This helps you imagine what certain products and items might look like in your home or construction project.

It’s not all about landscaping at Burnco, as they also offer fire pit kits that allow you to build one in your own backyard. You can also stack it with one of the two kinds of firewood they offer, pine and birchwood.

Pine is a softwood with a higher resin count that will burn swiftly, serving as excellent kindling with minimal smoke that’s perfect for the outdoors. Birch, on the other hand, is a hardwood, which burns brighter, making it perfect for fireplaces because of its pleasing fragrance but it can be used outdoors as well.

After ordering from Burnco, the firewood is delivered to your doorstep and stacked, arriving in either 1/3 cords (43 cubic feet) or 1/2 cords (64 cubic feet). If you prefer, they can also be palletized for your convenience, which takes the stress out of organizing them later on.

Pros

  • Has three stores in Edmonton
  • Offers two different cord sizes

Cons

  • Only offers big cords of firewood
  • No mixed bundles of firewood

The Firewood Farm is an Albertan business that’s operated by a family of farmers, aiming to provide residents with non-GMO and purely organic firewood. All the firewood on sale is purely from within Canada.

They offer Tamarack or Eastern larch which is a straight-grained softwood that’s easy to ignite and emits a good amount of heat. It’s considered one of the top choices for firewood and is the only kind that’s sold by The Firewood Farm.

They’re sold in two variations here—the first being the Cubic Meter Tamarack Tote which measures approximately 1/5 of a cord and can produce up to 5.7 million BTUs. The second is the Small Tamarack Bundle which is a more portable option for bringing on an outdoor trip, wherein 3 to 4 bundles will last for an entire evening.

Oddly enough, we like The Firewood Farm because they also offer Tamarack Chopping Stumps! Although you might think that’s just for splitting wood into smaller pieces, it’s also a stylish natural piece of furniture you can set a glass of wine on or use as a stool.

Moreover, if you buy 2 Cubic Meter Totes on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, The Firewood Farm offers free local delivery which normally costs $30 on other days. Alternatively, you can choose to pick it up at their location any day of the week as well.

Pros

  • Offers stylish and affordable Tamarack stumps
  • Free delivery on Tuesday & Wednesday

Cons

  • Weekends by appointment only
  • Only sells Tamarack firewood

Rockland is proudly Canadian-owned and operated, initially providing landscaping operations when it was first founded in 2004. Today, they’ve expanded their services and offerings covering landscaping materials, accessories, and commercial services.

We like Rockland because of the diverse products they offer and their involvement in the local community. They have donated landscaping services to schools, hospitals, and even local minor sports leagues.

The firewood they sell here has already been seasoned and is ready to light up to keep you toasty and warm. They offer premium woods that are easy to ignite, burn slowly, and are good to use for roasting marshmallows or S’mores.

For outdoor fires, you’ll want to go with their Birch offering, which emits a sturdy flame and will burn for a long time. If you want wood that’s good for your fireplace or firepit, then go with Spruce, which splits easily and doesn’t have a strong fragrance.

Both kinds of firewood are offered in two kinds of packaging, the first of which is a convenient 40″ x 24″ Firewood Bag, which is ideal for an evening or two. The other is the Large Firewood Bag which is approximately 1/4 cord or 3 cubic feet that can be stored for future use.

Pros

  • Offers snow removal and clearing services
  • Delivers to your doorstep
  • Offers Spruce firewood

Cons

  • Has no services to palletize the firewood
  • Doesn’t offer larger bundles for businesses

Lowe’s Home Improvement is one of the most popular hardware and storage solutions stores in Canada because it offers almost everything you’ll need for your home. Whether it’s a chandelier, tool storage, firepits, or firewood, you’ll find it here.

Speaking of firewood, Lowe’s offers kiln-dried recycled firewood from Xtraflame in two resealable packages of 0.3 and 0.75 cubic feet. They also have a larger corded 24 cubic feet that’s a mixture of beech, maple, and oak that’s split into 16-inch pieces.

They also have an unbranded 1 Cubic Yard of seasoned firewood sold in a resealable tote bulk bag. The only downside is that the type of wood is not indicated and is subject to change depending on which store location you buy it from, which we’re not a fan of.

This bulk bag contains around 95-110 pieces of locally sourced wood and is designed to be used both indoors and outdoors. Delivery is available in only specific stores, so you’ll have to call them beforehand.

Lowe’s also carries Xtraflame Eco Premium Fire Logs, which are tapered off into squared edges to provide a more sturdy stack of logs in the fireplace. These are 10 pieces of small pure hardwood with each log burning for about 3-4 hours, but on the downside, you’ll also need about 3-4 logs for a decent fire.

If you’re interested in eco logs, they have it here too, which is supposed to produce half of the emissions of regular firewood but can be difficult to ignite. Alternatively, you can grab a bag of Duraflame’s Wax Logs which light up fast but can’t be used for cooking or wood-burning stoves.

Pros

  • Offers a variety of firewood including wax logs
  • Has financing options and return policies

Cons

  • Doesn’t specify what kind of wood in 1 Cubic Yard offering
  • Firewood is sourced from outside of Edmonton
