Horseback riding might seem intimidating at first, especially if you’ve never been around horses. But in Edmonton, there are plenty of places that make learning to ride surprisingly easy and fun.
Many of these centers are tucked just outside the city, offering a quick escape from the urban sprawl. Plus, they’re used to first-timers, so no one’s going to judge you for accidentally calling a bridle a “leash” (we’ve definitely heard that before).
To help you get started on your horse riding journey, we’ve rounded up awesome spots for horse riding lessons in Edmonton—places that cater to all levels, ensuring you feel comfortable as you get familiar with your horse.
How much do horse riding lessons in Edmonton cost?
Horse riding lessons in Edmonton typically range from $40 to $100 per session, depending on the facility and experience level. Group lessons tend to be more affordable, while private lessons can cost between $75 and $150 per hour.

Whitemud Equine Learning Center Association provides a range of equine programs for people of all ages and skill levels, from beginner riding classes to more advanced horsemanship courses.
What really stood out to us was how inclusive they are. Their therapeutic riding programs are designed to support individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges, with guidance from certified instructors and trained volunteers.
We also heard great feedback about their summer camps, where kids not only ride but also take part in horse care activities and creative sessions like crafts, helping them bond with both the animals and each other.
The facilities are well-kept, which is a big plus, and it’s clear they take good care of both the horses and students. We noticed the horses looked healthy, calm, and well-groomed. The staff was also patient in guiding students and ensuring everyone felt safe around the animals.
We also liked that they partner with places like NAIT and Lakeland College. We think this is very important in providing hands-on learning opportunities for students in animal science and equine programs.
That being said, we’d recommend checking the schedule if you’re interested in more specialized programs. They can get really packed, especially during summer and holiday periods.

OPERATING HOURS | Monday to Saturday: 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Sunday: 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM |
What we love about Riverfront Equestrian Centre is that they offer both English and Western riding lessons. We really appreciate having the option to try both styles, as it gives riders a chance to explore different techniques and find what works best for them.
Riders of every skill level can learn in a clean and well-serviced facility featuring a heated indoor arena and a large outdoor ring, providing plenty of space and comfort.
The well-trained instructors tailor lessons to each rider’s pace, so learning is both fun and productive. The diversity of horses available also helps riders, whether beginners or advanced, feel comfortable and confident.
We also noticed that they offer equine-assisted psychotherapy, a therapeutic service that helps individuals build confidence, manage anxiety, and improve emotional well-being by engaging with horses in a supportive, guided environment.
One drawback, though, is that the site can be rather difficult to find for newcomers. It would be helpful if the Riverfront Equestrian Centre included clear directions or utilized GPS coordinates to make the journey easier for visitors.
Supportive community with great facilities
“The grounds are fantastic with lots of pen options for your horse. Jess is a wonderful instructor, my horse and I have both improved hugely since moving to Riverfront. The community at Riverfront is also amazing, so friendly and supportive. Would recommend to anyone wanting to take lessons, board or lease a horse!”

Safe, fun, and personalized lessons with well-cared horses
“Riverfront’s lesson program was highly valuable as my 5 year old began riding. Jess was safety focused and professional, but made riding fun, tailored the experience for his comfort level, and he always looked forward to his time in the barn. The lesson horses are top notch and are extremely well cared for. I would highly recommend this lesson program, no matter what age or level you are at!”

OPERATING HOURS | Monday to Friday: 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Saturday & Sunday: 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM |
The first thing we noticed about Amberlea Meadows was how tidy and organized the place was. The heated barn, indoor arena, and cozy lounge made it a comfortable spot for both riders and families, especially with Edmonton’s weather.
We liked that the lesson options work for different experience levels. One of our team members sat in on a beginner session and said the instructor was patient without being too laid back. Riders seemed comfortable asking questions, and the pace didn’t feel rushed.
We also love that they set up summer camps for kids, as it helps get them into horse care and riding early. They teach kids about grooming, stable care, and how to work around horses safely.
The only downside we found is that the size of the facility can feel a bit overwhelming at first. It’s easy to get lost unless someone walks you through it on your first visit.
Patient, confidence-building instruction
“My husband and I have been taking lessons with Ellen since 2019 (minus time off due to Covid). I was very nervous initially, due to a horseback riding accident when I was young. But Ellen is great at matching individuals with an appropriate horse given their level of experience and anxiety! She pushes just enough to encourage you out of your comfort zone, but not so much that it’s too scary or threatening. Her lesson horses are very well trained and cared for and lessons are challenging but fun. We are probably the oldest individuals taking lessons, but Ellen is very patient with us and always has a kind word and recognizes how difficult it can be for an adult to learn how to move their body in new ways. I leave looking forward to the next week’s lesson every time!”

Generational trust in a great lesson program
“I love it here and have wonderful memories looking back for myself. Now I bring my daughter there for lessons with Ellen and she is still amazing – my daughter loves it and is learning quickly and confidently. I would 110% recommend this place for your childs lessons etc.”

Little Bits Therapeutic Riding Association has been around since 1975, and we were really impressed by how they provide therapeutic horseback riding for everyone.
We really love that they offer lessons for everyone, regardless of age and skill level. They offer classes for children, teens, and adults, allowing everyone to experience the fun of horse riding.
One volunteer we spoke to mentioned that LBTRA serves up to 210 riders a year. We think this kind of consistent turnout speaks volumes about the quality of their programs.
The fact that their instructors are all qualified and follow the riding principles recognized by the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association makes us even more confident in their lessons.
We also fell in love with the location. It’s tucked away in the river valley, so it’s pretty quiet and laid-back—nice if you’re not into busy, crowded spots. One of our team members mentioned how peaceful it felt just walking up to the barn.
One downside is that it’s pretty hard to secure a spot with their lessons. Currently, they don’t accept new adult enrollees. You really have to monitor their website and social media pages for any openings.
Caring, knowledgeable staff
“Highly recommend. Staff are absolutely amazing. They are so understanding and knowledgeable. They care unconditionally for every child that walks through the door and always willing to help. My kiddo loves this place and looks forward to it every week. Thank you for providing such a great service.”

Exceptional staff and volunteers

5. Blarney Stone Farms

With over 40 years of experience since 1977, it’s clear that Blarney Stone Farms knows its stuff.
What we really love is how attentive the instructors are. They provide one-on-one attention to riders, which many riders said helped them get the hang of riding much more easily.
It’s also great that they welcome riders as young as six. One customer mentioned how their initially nervous child gained confidence after a few lessons, thanks to the patient instructor who made them feel comfortable and excited for each session.
The facility is pretty impressive too. It includes a large indoor arena, two outdoor rings, and a stabling for 34 horses. The 22 horses in the barn are well-trained school horses, so riders can rest assured that they’re safe when riding.
The summer camps held in July and August stood out to us. We love that riders don’t only get two hours of instruction each day, they also learn how to properly care for horses. This is important if they want to take horse riding seriously and get their own horse.
The only catch is the set schedule. You’ll need to take at least one lesson a week, which might not work for those needing more flexibility.
Loved the experience
An amazing barn! Loved every experience I’ve had there. 10/10 would recommend to young people learning to ride and those who are very skilled and experienced.
