10 Best Movie Theatres in Edmonton That’ll Make You Cancel Netflix

best-movie-theatres-edmonton

There’ve been a lot of good movies this year but watching it online just doesn’t feel as immersive as watching it in a movie theatre. When you visit a local cinema, you get the full experience – explosive surround sound, insane colors, and well – great popcorn!

And while you can’t hit pause on your favorite scenes, there’s just something so fun about reacting with a crowd. So, to make sure my fellow cinephiles get the most out of their fave films, I decided to list my personal recommendations.

These movie theatres are not just known for their lineup – they’re also great for that ultra-luxe experience with soft, reclining seats and intimate auditoriums. Don’t worry though, because I also have a lot of affordable options listed here!

If you’re looking for the ultimate movie experience in downtown Edmonton, Landmark Cinemas City Centre is the place to be. It offers reclining, lazy-boy-style seats that are pure luxury—they’re even heated and equipped with adjustable headrests!

The concession stand here is not an ordinary snack bar either. With a huge selection of snacks, including popcorn with free refills, you’re pretty much set for an entire movie. They even have Coke Freestyle machines, so you can customize your drink just the way you like it.

The real highlight here, though, is the immersive viewing experience. With cutting-edge 4K laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound, you’ll feel like you’re part of the action.

They also offer exclusive features like the ScreenX auditorium, where the movie extends onto the walls for a stunning 270-degree panoramic experience!

2. IMAX Theatre

With Alberta’s largest screen and state-of-the-art IMAX with Laser® projection, every film at the IMAX Theatre feels larger than life. The dual-laser system here delivers these stunning 4K visuals that give off unmatched colors and sharp contrasts.

The sound design also takes the experience to another level. The theatre has a 12-channel audio system with boosted sub-bass, making every sound super crisp. The speakers are strategically placed too,  so there’s perfect sound quality from any seat in the house.

After a 2013 renovation, it now features wider and more comfortable seats arranged to ensure an unobstructed view from every angle. This layout means you’ll always feel like you’re in the best seat, no matter where you are!

The Garneau Theatre, home to Metro Cinema, is a cozy gem in Edmonton that’s all about celebrating film. The historic charm of this old-school venue is perfect for enjoying various feature films, from cult classics to indie gems you won’t find anywhere else.

Inclusivity is a priority here too, with accessible seating options and a side door for wheelchair access. Even the bathrooms are spacious and designed with accessibility in mind, so everyone can feel comfortable.

Their calendar is available online, so you can see all the exciting screenings planned weeks in advance. It’s best to check out their page first as parking at the Garneau can be tricky. Though for late-night shows, you might luck out with a spot in the High Level Diner lot.

As for concessions, you’ll find the usuals like popcorn and soda, but with a bonus – your money supports a not-for-profit! Snack prices are also reasonable compared to chain theatres, though you might want to request extra flavor when you’re there!

4. The Capitol Theatre

If you want something more unique, the Capitol Theatre at Fort Edmonton Park is the place to go. This beautifully recreated 1929 venue offers an authentic old-timey charm, complete with its iconic Jasper Avenue facade.

The Capitol Theatre isn’t your typical movie house – it’s an intimate venue with excellent sightlines from every seat. While the seats may feel a bit snug, there’s plenty of legroom to keep things comfortable.

Just one thing to note is the admission fee, as it’s part of Fort Edmonton Park. You’ll pay general park admission and an additional fee for special events at the theatre. Don’t worry, though, as ticket prices are reasonable!

By the way, planning your visit is key since tickets must be purchased online. Plus, parking access can be tricky during mornings, especially since other visitors are coming to explore the park as well.

Located in the Currents Shopping Mall, this theatre combines convenience and luxury. With free parking available, you can easily access the cinema, although peak times might mean a short walk.

For those looking to elevate their movie night, the VIP section is a must-try. Reserved for guests 18 and over, it offers a cozy lounge where you can order food and drinks before heading to your seat. Servers also take your order at your seat, so everything is easy and convenient.

While the food and drink prices lean on the higher side, the atmosphere makes it a great option for date nights or special outings.

Cineplex Windermere also features technology like UltraAVX, RealD 3D, and D-BOX for those who love immersive viewing experiences. So, even the regular theatre experience here is just as amazing even without the VIP option.

6. Cineplex Cinemas

The recliner seats offer a spacious and comfortable experience for a typical movie. The sound and visuals in their ultraAVX auditoriums are solid, even if the screen size is on the smaller side.

The quieter atmosphere compared to other Edmonton theaters is a huge plus too, especially for those seeking a more laid-back experience. But for a more stress-free movie night, weekday showings or early weekend times are the best bet for avoiding crowds.

Cineplex South Edmonton Common is a solid go-to for movie lovers. The reclining black leather seats provide comfort that even rivals VIP theaters but at a more budget-friendly price. With spacious legroom and fewer seats in each auditorium, the setup feels less crowded too.

If you’re planning a family outing, the place has plenty to offer. Kids can enjoy a dedicated play zone before the movie, so parents can relax a bit before the film starts. There’s also a large party room for birthday celebrations, complete with staff who’ll handle everything.

While everything is stress-free, take note that concession lines can get long during peak hours. We recommend arriving early or pre-ordering your snacks so you can avoid the hassle. Also, don’t forget to layer a bit as the auditoriums can be a little too cold!

The self-serve concession is also a nice touch. Popcorn, snacks, and drinks are all help-yourself, so you can customize your movie treats without waiting in line. The soda machines have dozens of flavors too, like vanilla and raspberry, to jazz up your drink.

Landmark also nails the small details that boost the entire experience. They have this “Shout Out” feature where guests can personalize on-screen messages for special occasions. So if you’re celebrating an event via private screening, take note of this perk!

The movie theater at West Edmonton Mall is a great spot for catching the latest films, especially with its IMAX experience. The theater features adjustable seats for comfort, so you can really enjoy the film, whether you’re watching in standard seating or the immersive IMAX format.

The 4DX experience is another unique highlight, with motion seats that sync with the action on screen for a more interactive movie experience.

And if you’re looking for a bit of extra fun during your visit, this theater also offers arcade machines for a quick game before or after the movie.

For those with accessibility needs, the IMAX theater is located on the second floor, which means you’ll need staff assistance to access it via an elevator. It can be an inconvenience, so if you have mobility issues, it’s best to look elsewhere – there are plenty of options anyway!

10. Cineplex Cinemas Manning Town Centre

The Cineplex Manning Town Centre is a great option for its prime location in the city, with easy access from both North and South Edmonton. The theater boasts a spacious parking lot too, so there’s no need to worry even during late-night shows.

For those who enjoy a bit of outdoor relaxation before the show, the theater has an outdoor seating area with cute patio lights and furniture. And if you’re looking for a place to grab a bite, there are several restaurants surrounding the area.

The concession area is pretty standard, but expect to pay around $20 per person for a popcorn, soda, and candy combo. If you’re looking to save, make sure to bring your Scene points card for discounts on future tickets.

By the way, if you like a quieter theater experience, this location might actually be perfect for you. Unlike other busier Cineplex locations, Manning tends to be less crowded, meaning fewer interruptions and a more relaxed atmosphere.
