We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Today’s lesson is all about finding the perfect private school for your little Einstein. We know, we know… the mere mention of “private school” might conjure up images of stuffy uniforms and even stuffier price tags. But trust us, there’s a whole lot more to it than that.

We’re talking smaller class sizes where your kid isn’t just a face in the crowd. And most importantly, we’re talking about teachers who actually care about your child’s success – not just their test scores.

So put away those textbooks (for now), and let’s embark on an educational adventure! We’re about to uncover the best private schools in Edmonton.

How much is the tuition fee for private schools in Edmonton?

On average, the tuition fee for private schools in Edmonton is $13,067 per year. However, the final cost may change depending on the school’s reputation, facilities, and programs offered.

How We Chose

Academic excellence – We prioritized schools with consistently high academic performance. We focused on those with high standardized test scores, graduation rates, and university acceptance rates.
Curriculum diversity – Schools offering a range of programs, from Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) to specialized arts, sciences, and technology streams, stood out in our selection.
Qualified faculty – We looked for schools with experienced, well-qualified teachers. We paid attention to staff credentials, teacher-to-student ratios, and professional development opportunities for educators.
Extracurricular activities – Schools with a strong emphasis on extracurriculars – sports, music, arts, and leadership programs – were given higher consideration. These activities enrich the overall student experience, so they’re improtant.
Reputation & reviews – We considered feedback from parents, students, and alumni regarding their experiences with the school, from academics to school culture.

OPERATING HOURSMonday to Friday - 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) really caught our attention with its unique blend of top-notch academics and holistic approach.

We’re particularly impressed that it’s the only independent school in Alberta offering the full International Baccalaureate (IB) program from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

That means students are getting a globally recognized education that focuses on critical thinking, cultural understanding, and personal growth—and it shows, with a 100% university acceptance rate.

The 220-acre campus in Okotoks is another standout, providing an incredible backdrop for outdoor education. Whether it’s field research or physical activities, students are immersed in hands-on learning year-round.

With small class sizes (around 17 students), the level of personalized attention is impressive. Plus, the co-curricular offerings – from rugby and field hockey to a stellar fine arts program – really round out the student experience.

Pros

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) program
  • 100% university acceptance rate
  • Stunning 220-acre campus
  • Small class sizes
  • Well-rounded co-curricular activities

Cons

  • A few reports of not being inclusive

Ensures a supportive and attentive staff for students

“We had two children educated at STS and were very pleased. We tried many private and public schools in Calgary and for us, this was the best combination of high quality education and extracurriculars, decent class sizes, supportive personnel, and a beautiful setting.”

OPERATING HOURSMonday to Friday - 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Edmonton Academy really impressed us, especially for its focus on students with diagnosed learning disabilities. What we like most is how the school tailors its approach by offering a flexible and supportive learning environment from grades 3 through 12.

They stick to Alberta Education standards but go a step further by using multisensory teaching techniques. This makes all the difference for students needing that extra support.

The low student-to-teacher ratio was a big plus. It means each student gets the attention they need to succeed.

We also liked how they incorporate assistive tech like Chromebooks and Google Classroom to make things like note-taking and reading more accessible.

Their Universal Design for Learning framework really stands out. It helps students develop crucial life skills like time management and self-regulation. And the whole-school events, like the Terry Fox Run, really bring the community together.

Pros

  • Specialized learning environment
  • Small class sizes
  • Multisensory instructions
  • Assistive technology
  • Universal design for learning framework
  • Inclusive community events

Cons

  • Some reports of lack of support for mental health issues

Utilizes small class sizes to provide individualized attention

“I started Edmonton Academy in Grade 10. In late elementary and junior high I started to hate school. Teachers never had enough time to sit with me and help me understand. This then led me to bad grades and being disruptive in class. Edmonton Academy helped change my view of education. I went from failing to honors in most classes and started to actually enjoy school again. The small class sizes were really helpful which allowed the teachers more time to support each student. The teachers were wonderful and very supportive. They always taught subjects in a variety of ways to ensure all the students could learn the material in a way that best suited their learning style. I honestly believe that if I did not go to Edmonton Academy I would have never graduated high school. I can now say I have a diploma and a degree from Grant MacEwan.”

Turns students from near-dropouts to confident honor students

“i attended Edmonton academy for 4 years and my little brother attended for 9 so i spent pretty much my entire teenage years around the staff of Edmonton academy. this school was so much more to me than ill ever be able to explain. during my teen years Edmonton academy was my home and family. when i first arrived i was in the middle of beginning the process of dropping out of school completely. i had failed every grade before and somehow was never kept back but suffered from being in classes of 30 where i was never given the time to catch up. to put this into perspective my graduating class at Edmonton academy was 11 people. every day i had one on one teaching in every single subject and suddenly became a honor student with more confidence in myself than ever. not only did i get the support i always needed in my academics i also had multiple teachers i trusted to go to with anything and everything, they ALWAYS had my back. I’m still in contact with many of my teachers from EA and could never imagine a life without them in it. i will never be able to thank this school for everything it has done for me but I’m proud to say at 22 years old i now have a high stress job that i would have never been capable of doing before EA, and I’m happier than ever. I am the woman i am today because of this school and the amazing staff.”

Tempo School has been around since 1963. What really drew us in was its strong focus on intellectual development, covering both sciences and humanities.

With around 450-525 students across K-12, we like how the small class sizes give students that personal touch – it’s something we noticed right away.

The academic rigor here is a standout, with mandatory French from Grades 2 to 11 and a strong focus on foundational subjects like English grammar and geography.

What really caught our attention, though, is how they dive into science early. They have separate chemistry, biology, and physics classes starting in Grade 7. For those aiming higher, the Advanced Placement (AP) courses are a great way to get ahead in university.

We also spoke with a few students and parents, and they raved about the debate team. It has an impressive record in provincial competitions.

Pros

  • Small class sizes
  • Strong academic focus
  • Advanced placement (AP) courses
  • Successful debate team

Cons

  • A few reports of rude teachers

Progressive Academy really caught our eye with its mix of academic rigor and a wide range of programs that nurture creativity and leadership. Founded in 1984, the school’s holistic approach goes beyond academics. They also focus on emotional, physical, and social growth.

We like how they’ve created a multicultural, inclusive environment. Students can dive into subjects like robotics, musical theater, entrepreneurship, and even languages like French and Mandarin.

We were also impressed by the variety of extracurricular activities they offer – especially their Mountain Adventure School. It blends outdoor education with leadership training.

When we talked to parents and students, they had nothing but praise for the hands-on experiences.

On top of that, the school’s integration of digital learning platforms shows how committed they are to embracing technology in the classroom.

Pros

  • Holistic education
  • Multicultural and inclusive environment
  • Diverse program offerings
  • Exceptional extracurriculars
  • Strong use of technology

Cons

  • A few reports of no follow-up on school work

Encourages a positive and enjoyable school experience for children

“Very happy with the mix of academics and learning through play. Love that they incorporate music, gym and French this young. They are giving kids a strong foundation at such a young age. I wish the playground was put back together and outside play was more of a priority. My kids love their classmates and teachers and frankly enjoy school more than I imagined they would at 3/4yrs old.”

Offers small class sizes for personalized attention

“Exceptional pre-kindergarten experience! The dedicated teacher Gillian and Sunny fosters a nurturing environment, promoting early childhood development through engaging activities. The curriculum strikes a perfect balance between academic readiness and social skills. The small class sizes allow for personalized attention, and the facilities are thoughtfully designed to stimulate curiosity. Our child thrived in this enriching atmosphere, making friends and embracing a love for learning. Highly recommend for parents seeking a top-notch start for their little ones!”

WISE really stands out for how it blends academics with creative and hands-on learning. We checked out their curriculum, and it’s refreshing to see kids exploring everything from outdoor survival skills to Renaissance history.

Parents we spoke to said their children thrive in this environment – whether it’s storytelling and mythology for the younger ones or complex subjects for older students.

What we like about them is the range of unique electives they offer. Fencing, jewelry making, and even archery? That’s definitely not something you find in every school, and it gives the kids an extra layer of learning that’s both fun and enriching.

While they’re tuition-free as a charter school, there are some fees for certain programs. But overall, we were happy with the nurturing environment they create for students to thrive.

Pros

  • Balanced curriculum
  • Unique electives

    Tailored learning
  • Small class sizes
  • Publicly funded

Cons

  • A few reports of rude teachers

Provides a supportive environment where children thrive

“I did some school “shopping” and went to a lot of open houses for my kids. I wanted a school that would take my child as they are and encourage their development emotionally and educationally. My girl had been reading since she was 3yo, did 100pc puzzles. I found this school was exactly what she needed. Her brother saw how happy she is and had no problem attending kinder too. The teacher honestly care about your children, they follow the standards for education in Alberta and the community of parents is awesome. As an introvert myself, these parents and teachers make me feel at ease and I love to volunteer because we all want our kids to be in a loving & safe environment where they will succeed in the future. Looking forward for my kids doing the extra curricular activities the older kids get to do with music, theater, history, math and science!”

Cultivates a close-knit and supportive community

“I cannot say enough  good about this school, and what it brings to our children and the community it has brought together.  My children love school, they learn so much, and  they are treated so well by the teachers, children and staff. I’ve never known a place with so many genuinely lovely people.  Everyone knows everyone’s names, and everyone helps one another.  I am always shocked how people treat each other when I’m at other schools (bullying, exclusion, taunting, belittling), it just doesn’t exist at the WISE.  This is a special place where people are cherished, and respected and children can thrive.”
