How We Chose

Board certification – We prioritized rheumatologists certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to ensure a high standard of medical knowledge and training.
Expertise – We considered their subspecialties and areas of focus within rheumatology to match patients with the most relevant expertise.
Patient reviews – We carefully analyzed patient feedback and testimonials from various online platforms to gain insights into the experiences of individuals seeking rheumatological care.
Accessibility & patient-centric care – We considered factors such as appointment availability, wait times, and communication styles to ensure the rheumatologists on our list prioritize accessibility and patient-centered care.

Accommodates long-distance travel for appointments

“I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Lyddell on April 10th.  He was congenial, professional and explained everything to me in layman’s terms. His receptionist was also very pleasant and helpful.  She was very accommodating in booking my appointment when I could get in because I had to travel several hours to get to the city to see a specialist. I would highly recommend Dr. Lyddell to anyone in need of a rheumatologist.”

Goes above and beyond in patient care and testing

“Excellent specialist. If you get the chance to see Dr. Lyddell, count yourself lucky. Highly educated, intelligent and straight. I have been to multiple specialists seeking diagnosis for the last 18 years, the last 2 years more intensely as my symptoms progressed. Dr. Lyddell is the first doctor who actively listened and knew exactly what to test and how to interpret the results. I am finally going to receive help due to his diligence. He has literally gone above and beyond for us. Could not be more grateful. His receptionist is amazing as well, very friendly and extremely helpful, she also went above and beyond for us.”

Founded by Dr. Tharindri Dissanayake in 2017, Garneau Rheumatology has quickly made a name for itself by tackling the increasing demand for rheumatological services in the area.

Partnering with the University of Alberta, they’ve done an impressive job of cutting down wait times, which is something we really appreciate. After all, no one wants to wait longer than necessary for a diagnosis or treatment.

We were also impressed by their comprehensive expertise in managing a broad range of inflammatory arthritis conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and psoriatic arthritis.

We also love the flexibility they offer with their telehealth services. This is a game-changer for patients who can’t easily make it to the clinic, whether due to mobility issues or living in remote areas.

Some of the patients we spoke with mentioned how much they appreciated being able to consult with specialists from the comfort of their own homes.

Cons

  • A few reports of unprofessional receptionist

Listens attentively without rushing the appointment

“First visit with Dr Jason Soo in Edmonton today after years with my outstanding Rheumatologist in Vancouver.. to say the least I was a little concerned with the change but was pleasantly put at ease … upon arrival was greeted by the friendly receptionists, Dr Soo is very patient, an excellent listener, extremely knowledgeable, at no time did I feel rushed or that my questions were unwarranted… & the appointment was on time .. on the negative parking is a little difficult so if you can have someone drop you off & come back and pick you up It would be advisable… also, office area somewhat lacking in desk area, organization, and appeal.. certainly the small stuff.”

Takes the time to find the right medications with ease

I’ve been Dr Soo’s patient for a year and a half now. My rheumatoid arthritis is under control and I actually feel way better! I took a few tries to find the right meds but it was made so easy for me.I highly recommend him! And he actually listens when you talk.

OPERATING HOURSMonday to Thursday - 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Under the leadership of Dr. Lilia Olaru and Dr. Myat Lin Nyo, St. Albert Rheumatology offers a level of care that genuinely stood out to us. They’re deeply involved in clinical trials, meaning their patients benefit from the latest rheumatology advancements.

It’s not often you find a clinic that’s pushing the boundaries of treatment while still providing that personal touch.

What makes this place even more remarkable is the team-based approach. We’re talking about more than just doctors here – nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and even social workers are part of the mix.

One of the things we really liked is how they operate within the Alberta healthcare system, making many of their services accessible through provincial health insurance. It’s reassuring to know that advanced care doesn’t have to come with a prohibitive price tag.

Pros

  • Access to the latest treatments
  • Tailored treatment plans
  • Holistic care approach
  • Financial accessibility

Cons

  • A few reports of long wait times

Instills confidence in treatment and pain management

“Dr. Nyo. Let’s go straight to excellence. Reception was perfect and right on time. If you read the instructions given before the appointment you will know that by parking on the north side of the building you will enter on the second floor. Dr. Nyo is the most attentive physician I have encountered. He noticed that I had brought along some detailed notes about what I was experiencing. He asked me to tell him everything I had written down and listened carefully and asked questions for further explanation. He asked to keep my notes. He did ultrasound on the various areas where I was experiencing pain and showed me what he was seeing. He explained in basic language why the pain was happening. He suggested a plan of attack and diarized a call back to me in a few weeks. I am confident that with his treatment recommendations and my hard work I will overcome and manage my pain. I highly recommend Dr. Nyo.”

Relieves years of foot pain with precise and effective treatment

“I have been walking with a painful left foot that has affected my mobility in a big way for nearly 4 years, especially the last two. My family (former) family doctor wasted two years, even after many x-rays and an MRI I had to pay for. I finally get to see a Rheumatologist and he refers me to Doctor Nyo, to complete some deep tissue ultrasound of my two feet. Dr Nyo found the troubled joints, offered to and completed Kenalog injections on the spot. Within a day I was nearly pain free, something I have not experienced for at least the last two years. Dr Nyo is so skilled I can’t comprehend nor express the level of excellence in words. Thank you for helping me, you sir are a steely eyed missile man with that ultrasonic probe! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!”
