The Sawmill Restaurant Group was first established in November of 1976 by Tom Goodchild. This Edmonton-based company has received multiple recognitions over the years, including enRoute’s Top 100 restaurants in Canada.

They are best known for Sawmill Prime Rib & Steakhouse, a full-service restaurant with two locations in Edmonton. If you’d like to have a sneak peek of their cuisine before your reception, we highly suggest dining here first and try out their AAA Rib Eye or Prime Rib.

On the other hand, Sawmill Catering & Banquet Services is their catering department that’s capable of serving any group size ranging from a casual 25 people up to 5,000 guests at any location. Their diverse menu features international cuisines, which means that you’ll probably find something you’ll like here no matter where you come from or what your flavour profile is.

They also have gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options to ensure that everybody on your guest list can enjoy their creations. However, we think their vast menu selections can either be hit or miss—it can please those who want diversity or turn off those who are less patient.

You’ll probably need to set aside more than a few days to pour over their menu since their dinner salad and cold menu alone consists of 48 different variations, ranging from a Traditional Greek Salad to a Filipino Style Chicken and Pineapple Macaroni Pasta Salad.

However, their Gold Standard Customized Dinner Buffet is the highlight here and the range of salad choices make sense since you can choose up to five for this menu.  We recommend going for their signature chef-carved AAA Prime Rib and Roast Beef.

In the end, their long list of offerings is meant to encourage clients to customize their menu by mixing and matching the various dishes. If your guests are picky eaters or have different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, then Sawmill Catering & Banquet Services is the choice for you.

Pros

  • Offers a wide selection of cuisines
  • Can enhance or upgrade desserts in buffet dinner menu
  • Offers equipment rentals as per your needs

Cons

  • Long list of choices may turn off to some people
  • Children between 4-12 years old are charged for buffet menu
  • Minimum of 50 persons for dinner buffets

OPERATING HOURSMonday to Friday: 8:30am – 4:30pm

Mercer’s Catering was established in 1991 by Jill Mercer with the simple goal of providing creative catered cuisine. From its simple start as a one-woman show to over 50 employees doing 4,000 events per year, Mercer’s has cemented itself as one of Edmonton’s premier catering companies.

They’ve won several awards such as the 2018 Top Choice Mark of Excellence winner and the 2017 Edmonton Event Award for Best Caterer. Currently, they’re the official catering company for formal events held by the Alberta Government.

Today, the culinary team is led by Executive Chef Suran Govender in their off-site kitchen. During your event, you’ll have a dedicated team of chefs and servers with a supervisor on-site to ensure that your wedding runs smoothly.

As an Edmonton-based business that became successful, Mercer’s aims to provide the same kind of support to their fellow residents by sourcing exclusively within the city. Whether it’s organic local produce or tent rental referrals, they’ll even provide you with a list of local venues you can have your reception in.

What we like about Mercer’s is their menu flexibility—not only do you get to mix and match menu items, you can also request a special item or create your customized menu. They’re up to the challenge and will accommodate what you want as best they can.

Furthermore, even though their minimum requirement for an event is 12 people, they are willing to accommodate smaller groups. For these intimate settings, you can opt for Mercer’s drop-off non-staffed service, although they’ll still assemble the chafing dishes and set up the food for you.

Their wedding packages are tailored to suit your needs and will be emailed to you after your initial consultation. We like that Mercer’s offers “contemporary food stations” for wedding rehearsals, consisting of casual cuisines such as a Hotdog Station, Perogy Poutine Station, and a Taco Bar, just to name a few.

We’re also a big fan of Mercer’s commitment to implementing eco-friendly systems in their business model and try to give back to their community.  One example is that any leftover food from events is donated to either The Bissell Centre, The Mustard Seed Community Support Centre, or the Youth Emergency Shelter.

Pros

  • Can accommodate small intimate groups of less than 12 people
  • Wedding menu packages are customized per couple
  • Offers contemporary food stations for wedding rehearsals

Cons

  • Special meals for dietary requirements has additional cost
  • Limited menu for drop-offs or non-staffed catering
  • Requires $1,000 deposit to secure your preferred date

Justin is also another customer and was a fan of Mercer’s smooth operations as he shares:

A Cappella Catering Co. was established in 1991 by Todd Rutter and has been serving its cuisine in Edmonton for over 30 years. Since its inception, it has grown to over 100 employees and 19 delivery vans, with a menu that’s brimming with over 200 selections.

Whether you’re looking for a casual buffet, posh butler-style service, or even a self-serve food truck, there’s plenty of options to make sure your reception is the event of your dreams. Whether you’re hosting a casual office lunch or a wedding with over 500 guests, A Capella Catering Co. can cater to your needs.

We like A Capella Catering Co. because Todd Rutter is hands-on and still involved in daily operations, so you’ll probably see him at your reception checking that their high standards are being upheld. From the planning stages until your last guest has gone home, you can expect the highest level of care with this company.

A Capella Catering Co. offers all-inclusive wedding packages with a wide selection of menu items for you to choose from. Alternatively, you can modify it to suit your preferences or even create your own customized menu upon request.

The good news is that their wedding packages already include linen, dinnerware, glassware, cutlery, coffee/tea, and water service.  Staff will also be available ‘round the clock during your reception to make sure your guests are properly taken care of.

We also like that you can avail of individual menus for each stage of the wedding, such as the stag party, rehearsal dinner, or even the post-wedding breakfast. If you want to make it an even more memorable experience, we highly recommend renting their Curbside Food Truck for self-serve hearty meals.

Pros

  • Can customize wedding packages
  • Hands-on owner
  • Can rent their Curbside Food Truck

Cons

  • Modifying a menu package will incur extra fees
  • Linens included in package may not suit your taste
  • No liquor or bar services
