Carpets take a lot of beating and scuffing from shoes and spills and the occasional pet scratches. While most carpets are hardy and can withstand years of underfoot abuse, it’s still important to have a frequent deep cleaning to extend their lifespan.
Here are some ways you can clean your carpets and keep them looking new.
Club Soda and Vinegar
If you have wine and beer stains on your carpet, you can pour club soda onto the clean cloth and blot the stain. Don’t rub, simply blot until the stain appears lighter and use more club soda as necessary.
If club soda doesn’t work, you can try white vinegar. Mix a one-to-one ratio of white vinegar and water then spray it down to the stained area.
Wait for 10 to 15 minutes for the carpet to soak in the vinegar solution then press and clean, dry sponge down to the saturated area to absorb the solution. Repeat as necessary until the stain is gone.
If you have pets, using organic cleaners instead of caustic chemicals is recommended. You can just spray the solution onto your stained area and then scrub to remove the stain and odour.
Next, wipe it off with a white cloth or paper towel. You can use organic cleaners on most stains like coffee or sauces.
Even if you don’t have stains, you still need to clean your carpet to avoid the buildup of dust and other allergens. Try to use carpet beaters twice a week to remove dust and food crumbs.
To do this, hang your carpet on a laundry line or fence then strike it vigorously with the carpet beater to loosen the dirt. It’s going to be a bit of a workout, but it will make it much easier for you to vacuum or wash the carpet if you do this first.
To make things easier for yourself, you can also invest in carpet cleaners or vacuum machines. Using these tools will make sucking out dirt and stain much easier and less time-consuming for you.
