Top 5 Art Classes in Edmonton That Help You Get Creative At Any Age

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Instructor Experience and Teaching Style: I selected classes with instructors who can break things down clearly for beginners, yet still keep advanced learners engaged.
  • Variety of Media and Classes Offered: I looked for studios that go beyond just painting and offer a wide range of options (such as pottery, drawing, and mixed media) to give students room to explore and grow.
  • Class Environment and Group Size: I focused on classes that maintain a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with small group sizes that allow for personal guidance and a more hands-on experience.
  • Scheduling Flexibility and Accessibility: I considered how easy it is to fit the classes into a busy schedule.
  • Cost and Value for Money: I chose art classes that deliver strong value for what you pay, factoring in both teaching quality and included materials.

It started with a painting date with friends—just canvases, some wine, and a whole lot of laughing at our messy brushwork. I’m not much of a painter, but somewhere in between mixing colors and trying to fix a lopsided tree, I realized I was actually enjoying myself.

More than that, I wanted to get better. Not just for the next painting night, but because it felt genuinely good to create something with my own hands.

So I started looking into art classes around Edmonton a few days later. I looked into reviews, asked some friends, and even went to some exhibits to meet art lovers who could direct me to good spots in the city.

After trying and enrolling in a bunch of classes, here are the classes that really stood out to me!

How much do art classes in Edmonton cost?

Art classes in Edmonton typically cost between $25 and $60 per session, depending on the medium and instructor experience. Multi-week courses often range from $150 to $400. Private lessons can cost upwards of $100 per session.

OPERATING HOURSTuesday Evening: 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Wednesday Morning: 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Thursday Evening: 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM

Saturday Morning: 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Sunday Morning (Live Model Sessions): 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

I went with my friend to one of her weekend classes at The Adrian Zorzut School of Fine Art. I was just there to keep her company, but the space had a calm, focused energy that didn’t feel anything like a usual classroom.

I saw people in their twenties sketching beside older folks who’d clearly been painting for years, and it all just felt natural. Everyone seemed comfortable doing their own thing, without any pressure to keep up.

What I noticed right away was how hands-on the instruction was. One of the instructors spent a good chunk of the session working with a beginner, breaking down composition and giving them clear steps to follow.

At the same time, other students were free to dive into their own projects, with guidance available when needed.

My friend mentioned they offer optional live-model sessions on Sundays, which she said were her favorite part. It was clear that the school tries to give students a mix of structure and creative freedom.

The only downside is the narrow scope—it’s all about traditional art. If you’re into digital media or mixed-media work, you might want to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Personalized mentorship
  • Freedom of style
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Broad student base
  • Focus on fundamentals
  • Supportive community

Cons

  • Narrow focus

Inspiring and welcoming

“I have a very talented friend that creates here,   who inspired me to try oil painting. I am just beginning and wanted to start somewhere so I took a northern lights workshop and it was such a great experience. Adrian was an amazing and patient teacher, I am so excited to learn and create more in the classes. Everyone in there was so beyond friendly and the demographic was diverse and I felt very comfortable. The workshop would be an amazing date or bonding experience or gift i’ll keep in mind for future. Inspiring place, so glad I tried it!”

Patient guidance and supportive community

“I have always wanted to take an art class, and as soon as I retired, I finally had time to do this.  I received a wonderful birthday gift, a gift certificate for classes at The Adrian Zorzut School of Fine Art.  From the moment I walked into the studio I felt welcomed and comfortable.  I was a little nervous learning some sketching and basic art skills, but Adrian’s easy nature and patience put me right at ease.  I have now completed my first oil painting, and I’m very proud of it and looking forward to choosing my next project.  I have a lot to learn, but Adrian is an amazing teacher, I can’t wait to work on my next project.

I have met some wonderful fellow artists at the studio, and enjoy

their company and encouragement.  If you have ever wanted to try art classes, I highly recommend this art school.”

OPERATING HOURSMonday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Saturday: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Sunday: By appointment

Urban Art Studio 101 caught my attention because of the variety they offer. They run classes for every level—from beginner drawing and watercolor to more advanced oil painting, acrylics, and mixed media.

I wanted something low-pressure but still creative, so I signed up for one of their weekend acrylic sessions without much experience going in.

What made it easier was that all materials were included. I didn’t have to prepare or bring anything; I just showed up and started painting.

The class size was small, which made the experience feel more personal. The instructor was able to check in with everyone individually, and the feedback felt tailored rather than rushed.

I also liked how open the studio felt. There was a good mix of people there to learn, experiment, or simply have fun.

Beyond the regular classes, they host outdoor sketching events, group exhibitions, and themed sessions like “Neon Nights” and “Date Night Art.” I haven’t tried those yet, but I saw one in progress, and it looked like something I’d definitely come back for.

The only thing worth noting is that the studio doesn’t offer formal accreditation. If you’re looking to build a portfolio or earn credentials, this might not meet those goals.

Pros

  • Diverse offerings
  • All materials included
  • Small class sizes
  • Strong artistic community
  • Outdoor sketching and painting events
  • Special themed events

Cons

  • No formal accreditation offered

Friendly, all-levels studio with supportive mentors

“Incredible and welcoming art studio! Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn painting, drawing, or watercolor techniques, or an experienced artist looking to refine your skills, this is the place for you! Sandra and Fred are not only exceptionally talented artists but also kind and supportive mentors. The opportunity to have 1:1 classes are an exceptional way to receive personal guidance and learn at your own pace. A must visit art studio in the city!”

Welcoming, well-equipped space

“I recently attended a painting class at Urban Art Studio and it was an exceptional experience! The instructor was knowledgeable, patient, and provided clear guidance throughout the class. The studio itself is a creative and inspiring space, filled with all the necessary materials and a welcoming atmosphere.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this class caters to all skill levels. I learned new techniques and felt encouraged to explore my creativity. The small class sizes allowed for personalized attention, making the learning experience even more enriching.

Overall, I highly recommend Urban Art Studio to anyone interested in improving their painting skills or simply looking for a fun and engaging activity. I’m looking forward to attending more classes in the future!”

I was chatting with someone sketching at a cafe one afternoon, and she happened to mention she’d been taking classes at Pro’s Art School.

She’d only been there a few months, but the way she talked about it, you could tell it wasn’t like the usual art programs around the city.

That got me curious, so I looked them up and saw just how much they emphasize technique and structure.

They follow an atelier-style method. Students work through structured levels, starting with grid drawing and tonal studies before moving into more advanced brushwork and composition.

The person I spoke to showed me a few of her earlier works versus what she was working on now, and the difference was honestly impressive.

I also found out they regularly invite guest artists—big names like Zhaoming Wu and Sherrie McGraw. From what I’ve heard, those workshops are incredibly worthwhile and blend right in with the school’s overall approach.

The school’s setup is artist-friendly—tilt desks, easels, and still-life scenes that remain in place, allowing students to continue working on the same piece over time.

That said, the highly structured approach might not click with everyone. If you’re looking for open-ended, experimental creativity, this school may feel a bit too focused on realism and technique.

Pros

  • Atelier-style instruction
  • Guest instructor workshops
  • Supportive, non-competitive environment
  • Studio flexibility
  • In-house gallery visibility
  • Year-round availability

Cons

  • Rigid curriculum may feel limiting

Supportive and consistent instruction

“I spent about two years at Pro’s Art and my art skills dramatically improved. Gene helped me improve my drawing and painting skills. Gene is a welcoming and supportive teacher. I would highly recommend this school to anyone.”

Helpful techniques and professional guidance

“Really good place to learn art. For all level artists. Gene is a professional artist and will teach how to paint from beginning level. His techniques are really helpful to learn painting.”

4. Creation Space

OPERATING HOURSDepends on the open classes

Creation Space doesn’t feel like a typical art studio, and that’s exactly what makes it worth noticing.

When I dropped by one of their weekend open studio sessions, it felt like the space was built for families. The bright, welcoming space made me feel like I was walking into a mix of a playroom, a classroom, and an art lab.

Toddlers were elbow-deep in sensory bins while older kids mixed colors at the clay station. No one was rushed or corrected, and everything from the materials to the setup seemed designed to let kids (and parents) explore freely.

They offer classes for all ages, starting as young as 16 months.

One thing that really stood out was the collaborative canvas workshops—families painting side by side and leaving with a piece they made together. It felt more like making a memory than just taking a class.

That said, if you’re looking for traditional art instruction or skill-building as an adult, this probably isn’t the right fit.

Pros

  • Family-focused, child-led studio
  • Wide age range and inclusive offerings
  • Open-studio & sensory exploration
  • Experienced educator founder
  • Highly-engaging, ever-fresh activities
  • Inviting and bright studio environment
  • STEAM-inspired open-studio design
  • Custom collaborative family workshops

Cons

  • Primarily geared toward young children

Warm, creative, and kid-focused

“We have been religiously attending creation space for the last year and my kids truly adore it. Ali consistently keeps things fresh with new and creative ideas. My children look forward to their class each week. She is a pleasure to be around and interacts enthusiastically with all the children. The time flies by so quickly because there is so much to do. We have done both drop off classes and parented classes and both are wonderful. I wish there were more art studios for children in the city so thank you for creating a safe home for my art loving kids”

Creative, relaxed, and kid-led

“I’ve been coming here with my daughter for the past year for a weekly class and it is one of my favorite things that I’ve done with my daughter. Every week has been so unique and different, I love seeing my daughter’s creative side come out. My daughter also fell in love with teacher Ali, she is great with kids. Each session we’ve come home with a new canvas which we proudly display in our home. The class is a child led, no pressure atmosphere and the story and snack time built in is genius! We will keep coming back as long as we can. Thank you Ali for making such a wonderful place for my daughter and I to enjoy, you truly have a great passion for what you do as it shows in the classes!”

5. Hanul Art School

OPERATING HOURSTuesday–Friday: 4:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Saturday: 9:45/10:00 AM – 4:00/6:00 PM

Sunday & Monday: Closed

Hanul Art School made it to my list for how they blend structure, creativity, and accessibility.

A big part of that is how inclusive their programs are. They offer classes for a wide age range, from kids as young as 2.5 years old to adults. It’s rare to find a school that welcomes toddlers and also helps teens with serious portfolio prep.

Another thing that stood out to me was the structure of their program. Instead of dropping into random lessons, students move through age-based levels. They go from studying beginner fundamentals to attending more applied, skill-building classes.

Additionally, I liked that classes are small, capped at around eight students. During the trial session I sat in on, the instructor had time to give thoughtful feedback.

I was especially impressed by how Hanul gives students a real platform to showcase their work, like their annual summer exhibition. It’s a public way to celebrate progress, and some students have even gone on to join city-wide contests.

That said, the class schedule might not work for everyone. They’re only open on Tuesday to Saturday, with most classes in the late afternoon or evening. This could be a challenge for anyone needing weekday daytime options or more flexibility.

Pros

  • Wide age range
  • Multidisciplinary mix beyond art
  • Structured curriculum with progression
  • Small class sizes & trial options
  • Annual exhibition & art contest platforms
  • Unique creative camps
  • Well-organized environment

Cons

  • Limited operating hours

Kind instructors, fun materials

“My children loves this place. Thery are very excited about going to art school every week. I really like this place because of the instructors being nice and kind to children, (They are very good at dealing with kids.)

The lessons are creative and they use vairous material like acrylic paint, water pain, soft pastels, crayons etc.

Also, I have sending my kids to the summer camp which kids can creat their own story book. My kids this summer program!!!!! They waits this program whole year!!!!!”

Creative, fun, and well-organized

“A fantastic art school for kids to lean into their creativity.

They also offer fantastic birthday packages! My daughter had a wonderful birthday at Hanul. Catherine was so easy to work with and Veronica was a fantastic instructor to lead the girls through their craft! They got to take home the cutest magnets and photos holders.”
