Alberta Ballet School is a gem in the world of dance education, offering various ballet programs for all ages and abilities. These programs range from engaging introductory classes for little ones to the prestigious Professional Division program for aspiring ballet stars.
When we visited, the quality of instruction really stood out. The staff’s passion for ballet is infectious and inspiring. The Artistic Training Program for Grades 7-12 is especially impressive, providing a strong foundation for young dancers.
The advanced Post-Graduate Program is also noteworthy. It prepares students for professional careers at a cost of $16,600 per year, with an additional $10,000 for the residence program.
What we liked most, though, was the Trainee Program – it’s an excellent bridge to a professional career, giving students hands-on experience with the Alberta Ballet Company. Plus, it’s tuition-free for those fortunate enough to be selected.
Pros
- High-caliber instruction
- Comprehensive programs
- Free tuition for selected students
Cons
- High cost

The Edmonton School of Ballet (ESB) has long been a beacon of excellence in the dance community, known for its exceptional training and comprehensive programs. Since its founding in 1967 by Margaret Flynn, ESB has been nurturing young talent with dedication and care.
What sets ESB apart is its diverse curriculum, which includes Pre-Ballet, Junior Ballet, and Ballet Progressions Syllabi.
We were particularly impressed by the emphasis on the Vaganova method, a renowned Russian ballet technique that focuses on precision, grace, and strength. This approach gives students a robust foundation in classical ballet, which is essential for their dance journey.
When we visited, we were taken by the school’s facilities. ESB boasts eight spacious studios, each equipped with sprung floors to prevent injuries. They also have barres, mirrors, and stereo equipment.
They also have five large dressing rooms, a welcoming office, and a cozy lounge area for parents and students, which creates a nurturing environment that feels like a second home.
Pros
- Historical legacy
- Comprehensive curriculum
- Exceptional facilities
Cons
- Competitive admission
Offers a supportive environment without pressure
“i dance here and it is awesome i am in the prep ( pre-professional program ) and i love it. Yes it is hard but it makes me a better dancer and i want to dance. This school teaches you how to dance with technique and elegance. I really like our school cause they do not force you to do anything such as point. Point is where you and ballet shows where they are hard on the end and you stand on your toes and you can only do it if you have strong ankles witch most schools don’t do. I love this school cause i love to dance !!!!!!!”

Delivers top-notch training at ESB/VimyDance
“Edmonton’s best ballet school, with an excellent, highly trained staff, just look at their incredible credentials. This year they had 2 dancers qualify for the Genee international ballet competition in Lisbon, Spain. This is an incredible feat and honour and reflects the high quality of training provided at ESB/VimyDance.”

“My daughter has danced here since she was 5 years old and has had nothing but the best experiences. Her teachers have been always knowledgeable and supportive and she has learnt so much from all of them. It is always a positive experience and she has made many amazing friends at Leckys. There is nowhere else she would rather spend her evenings! Front desk staff are amazing, organized and helpful. We are always impressed with the year end concerts at the level of professionalism from all the dancers, teachers and staff. Very happy with our school!”

Creates a positive environment for children
“Lecky School of Dance is an amazing dance school my daughter has been a part of since she was 3. This studio has had such a positive impact on my daughter and her confidence. The teachers are wonderful and we recommend Lecky’s to anyone with beginner to advanced dance abilities! Lecky’s is pretty much my daughter’s second home and she has made so many long-lasting friendships here. The recital at the end of the year is so well-put together; you can see how much effort and time goes into it by the entire Lecky’s staff, teachers and students!!”

When it comes to standout ballet education in Edmonton, Edmonton Dance Factory (EDF) is a top contender. Founded over 35 years ago, this school has built a reputation for nurturing well-rounded, technically proficient, confident dancers.
One of the unique aspects we like about EDF is its flexible class structure. Students can choose to enroll in as many or as few classes as they like, accommodating different levels of commitment.
They boast a highly qualified and diverse faculty, including instructors with impressive professional backgrounds in ballet and other dance forms. For instance, Corynne Nicole Barron has performed with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet on “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” and as a soloist with Cirque du Soleil.
The classes are also relatively affordable, with full-year classes costing only $78 monthly for one-hour sessions. However, a non-refundable deposit of $50 is required to pre-register.
EDF also offers summer camps with prices ranging from $250 to $370 plus GST, depending on the program and age group. Sessional classes are available for those looking for a more flexible and less intensive option, typically costing around $95 for six-week sessions.
Pros
- Years of experience
- Flexible class options
- Experienced and qualified faculty
Cons
- A few reports of being unresponsive to emails
Manages the complexities of a large school effectively
“We are going into our third season at EDF. My daughter wants to take ALL of the classes because she loves going so much! This school has a high level of dance, engaging choreography, classy and age-appropriate costumes, and an easy-to-use website setup for managing my child’s class. Any inquiries I’ve had have been responded to very quickly and the information given to parents for recital events is extremely thorough. This is a large school and I’m sure there have been some road bumps along the way due to the scope of work that is involved in running it but we are very happy with our choice to dance at EDF and drive a fair distance just to take our daughter there.”

Assists in finding the best class and flexible schedules
“EDF is an incredible dance studio. I am a mom of 4 girls and all of my girls have enjoyed the teachers immensely. They strive hard to assure all dancers are enjoying their class and they go above and beyond in assuring their are friendships made. We have been at EDF for several years and I cannot express how grateful I am to be part of such a wonderful studio. I STRONGLY recommend this to anyone considering to dance. Kelsey especially has been extremely supportive and patient in helping me find the best class and assuring the times work well as she understands as a mom of 5 my schedule needs to be flexible. My girls LOVE it here EDF is our second family, we have developed many long-lasting friendships as well:)”

Dance Theme Academy (DTA) has been igniting its students’ passion for performing arts for over 40 years, earning it a well-deserved spot on our list. We love how they offer a variety of dance programs in such a safe, caring, and inclusive environment.
When we visited, we were blown away by the instructors’ wealth of knowledge and experience. They’ve trained in places like London, New York, and Los Angeles, bringing a global perspective to their teaching.
And let’s not forget the incredible experiences the school provides, like performing in parades at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Some of the students we talked to couldn’t stop raving about these trips.

Supports children’s day-to-day life improvement
“My daughter is in her fourth year of dance this year. It has helped tremendously with her anxiety and confidence in her day to day life. She has also made some good friends in the process! The teachers are the best. I will definitely be starting my younger daughter in a class when she is ready.”
