The 5 Best Emergency Vets in Edmonton for Urgent Pet Needs

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Experience: We focused on clinics with years of experience in emergency veterinary medicine, particularly those that handle urgent and complex cases.

Location: We prioritised clinics that are accessible, especially for emergency cases when every minute counts.

Services Offered: We chose emergency vets that have 24/7 emergency services, surgery, and intensive care. We prefer clinics with a full range of services under one roof.

Pricing: We understand that emergency care can be costly, but we also want reasonable and transparent pricing.

When our golden retriever suddenly fell ill at night, panic instantly set in. We have a vet, but at that moment, it’s not currently available. That made the situation even frustrating.

That’s when we started frantically searching and calling various clinics, hoping someone would pick up. Fortunately, a clinic helped us. But truth be told, we’re not that ready for such scenarios.

After that moment, my sister and I decided to keep a directory of the best emergency vets in Edmonton. We asked around and researched to come up with a solid list.

Read on to discover some clinics that offer pet emergency care without hassle!

How much does an emergency vet charge in Edmonton?

An emergency vet typically charges from $100 to $150 for a basic examination. If your pet needs a particular laboratory or surgery, expect that it will increase the price. Additional costs to consider are critical care and hospitalisation.

Edmonton West Animal Hospital is a vet clinic with over 10 years of experience. We believe that their experience speaks volumes about the quality of care they provide.

We’re happy to know that they have wellness, dental, and surgery care. It makes life easier when your pet needs more than a routine check-up.

They also offer emergency care, but note that they aren’t a 24-hour pet emergency clinic. That said, they’ve extended their hour so your pet has better chances of being seen if something happens.

Another thing we like about this clinic is that they accept walk-ins. Appointments are preferred to keep things moving, but in emergencies, you can walk in. They’re upfront about wait times, which we appreciate.

Their previous clients are also happy with their services. A client said that her dog was misdiagnosed by their regular vet clinic, and Edmonton West Animal Hospital did their best to set up more analysis to provide them with the right diagnosis.

Another said that the last-minute ultrasound appointment for her cat is hassle-free, paired with great pricing.

Pros

  • 10 years of experience
  • Wide range of services
  • Extended hours and days
  • Accepts walk-ins for emergencies
  • Hassle-free appointment process
  • Transparent about their wait time

Cons

  • Not a 24-hour emergency vet clinic
  • Walk-ins may involve longer wait times

Amazing staff

“The staff there are all amazing from the time I walked in with Millie with no appointment to the surgery the next day. They walked me through everything and answered all my questions. I would recommend Edmonton West Animal Hospital to anyone with a pet.”

– Ms. Sherryl MacAdam, Google Review

Amazing experience

“Amazing experience! Just brought my girl in to get spayed, and the staff were super helpful with any questions I had and to make sure I understood the aftercare for my pup. I thought the procedure was going to take way longer than it did, but to my surprise, it was super quick! Unfortunately, I had to work late that day, so it was really helpful that the clinic was open late and didn’t charge any extra fees for late pickups! 10/10 would recommend this clinic for spay/neuter services!”

Century Park Animal Hospital is another reputable vet clinic with services spanning from wellness exams to emergency care.

One thing that stood out to us is that they’re fully equipped with tools and the necessary equipment to perform advanced tests. They have radiology, laparoscopy, and small animal orthopaedic surgeries.

Not all vet clinics are as highly-equipped as theirs. In fact, clients praise the clinic for performing efficient TPLO surgeries that saved their pets’ lives.

We also appreciate their approach to emergencies. They don’t require any appointments, starting at 5 PM to midnight. They’re not a 24-hour clinic, but they have an overnight team on standby.

During their emergency hours (5 PM to midnight), please note that they follow the triage system. They prioritise animals in distress or in need of immediate care. But no worries, because they can accommodate clients simultaneously with their available vets.

We also love that financing options are available. They offer financing through Scratch Pay, iFinance, and Lendcare. This makes their service more accessible to their clients.

Despite the clinic’s positive feedback, there are also some shortcomings. Clients mentioned long waits, which can be frustrating during emergencies.

Pros

  • Wide range of services available
  • Fully equipped clinic
  • Different surgeries available
  • No appointments required for emergency care from 5PM onwards
  • Prioritises animals in critical condition
  • Flexible financing options

Cons

  • Not a 24-hour emergency vet clinic
  • Occasional long wait time

Attentive doctor and staff

“I came in with my very anxious cat, and they handled her really well. Dr. Anthony was extremely attentive to all the details. All the staff were gentle and very caring. I felt reassured the whole time I was there.

Grateful for the vet team that took care of my cat while they tried to figure out what was wrong. She’s doing a lot better now than before and definitely will be coming back in the future.”

– Ms. Dazznell Martinez, Google Review

Efficient and kind staff

“Dr Anthony and all the staff were very efficient and kind. All who work at this clinic go above and beyond, and Dr Anthony is incredibly dedicated and a talented vet. Our dog Franklin had the very best care, and I called the clinic in the middle of the night, and Dr Anthony answered my call and spoke with me and reassured me that our pup’s surgery had gone well. Wonderful experience and felt very cared for and pleased with the outcome, and the follow-up calls  were much appreciated.”

Boreal Veterinary Centre is a vet clinic based in Edmonton, but with expanded service offerings to Northern Alberta. We love that they made their service more accessible to more animals and pet owners who need it.

The facility itself is impressive. With nine exam rooms, a large ICU and treatment areas, and three surgical suites, it’s clear they’ve invested heavily in animal healthcare.

When it comes to their emergency care, they have dedicated emergency veterinarians. They treat simple wounds, severe trauma, and even complex endocrine diseases.

For us, it’s important to have knowledgeable and skilled emergency vets. This way, pet owners like us can have that peace of mind knowing that our beloved animals are in good hands.

We’re also drawn to their specialty services, ranging from oncology and radioactive iodine therapy to cardiology. It’s reassuring to see advanced care options available under one roof.

However, some clients mentioned that they charge higher prices. For instance, a client said that a $400 charge for an insulin prescription for his dogs is way too much.

Pros

  • Expanded service coverage to Northern Alberta
  • Spacious and well-quipped facility
  • Dedicated emergency veterinarians
  • Advanced speciality services
  • Skilled staff

Cons

  • Higher pricing compared to other clinics

Kind and compassionate

“I cannot say enough good about this clinic.  If it had not been for Dr. Kenneth C, both of my kittens would have died.  He steered me in the right direction, I was able to get the right medication & they are almost turning 2 and are alive!  The kindness & compassion when my world was turned upside down will never be forgotten.  Cute photos included.”

– Ms. Megan Armstrong, Google Review

Wonderful staff

“I’ve been here for both emergency services and specialists

This clinic has absolutely wonderful staff -Specialists, emergency vets, vet techs and support staff are all fantastic, kind and compassionate and competent.

The clinic is well planned and clean, and welcoming. They are even set up so that you can drive right up and get emergency help with a gurney to bring your dog in, which I unfortunately needed recently

We are so lucky to have such a great facility in Edmonton”

Oxford Animal Hospital is a well-established clinic with 10 years of experience. They serve clients from Albany, Oxford, and Claireview.

We appreciate their solid workforce. It’s composed of doctors, clinic managers, and registered health technicians. To us, that balance matters because it means care, admin, and follow-through are well-taken care of.

They also got a nice list of services, though not as broad as some bigger clinics. They cover the essentials, including spaying, surgery, and pet euthanasia when needed.

For their emergency care, they prefer an advanced notice before you go to their clinic. A call minutes before you arrive will ensure that their staff can get everything ready for your pet. They can handle diagnostic tests, digital radiography, and thermal support.

When we talked to pet owners, many praised Dr. Tamer’s surgical skills. A client said that Dr. Tamer performed two surgeries on his cat, and both went smoothly with fast recoveries.

Just a heads up that some pet owners flagged steep prices. We’ve heard mentions of $5000 for surgery and $1000 for wound stitching.

Pros

  • 10 years of experience
  • Strong and balanced team
  • Offers essential services for pets
  • Provides emergency care
  • Skilled and caring doctors

Cons

  • Limited range of services
  • High costs for some services

Kind and helpful

“I cannot say enough about how kind, compassionate and helpful this clinic is! Dr.

Mahmoud went above and beyond for my Angus when he wasn’t eating and wasn’t himself. Turned out he had a pretty bad infection, and I am so glad they got me in as quickly as they did! Even when Angus didn’t improve the morning after, they got me in right away and gave him IV fluids and meds! He is almost back to his normal self. I am so eternally grateful to Dr. Mahmoud and his staff!”

– Ms. Adelya Crocker, Google Review

Wonderful vet

“Dr Tamer is the most wonderful, kind-hearted soul! He is such a good man, which translates to a wonderful Vet. Truly so happy with our care!!! Love his patience with the animals, and affordable prices. He always goes out of his way to make the experience smooth and positive. Genuinely appreciate the girls at the front desk, who over the years have shown such great patience and love for their clients!!! Would 5/5 recommend this animal hospital for all your pet’s needs.”

Gateway Veterinary Centre is a full-service canine and feline clinic in South Edmonton. We like that the clinic is newly built and easily accessible, which already

Since it’s a full-service firm, expect that they have a complete list of services. From ultrasound to vaccinations, they have it all.

They also have emergency services, including but not limited to eye trauma injuries, urinary blockage, and dog bite wounds.

We also appreciate their online booking portal. We can check schedules, book directly, and even access vaccination records and lab results in one place. It’s super convenient for busy pet owners.

Clients are also satisfied with the clinic’s services. They said that the doctors and staff are all skilled and really manage to keep pets calm during the appointment.

Still, some mentioned an inconsistency in quotes. One client said a phone quote tripled at the clinic.

Parking is also limited, so you may end up parking on the street.

Pros

  • Newly-built clinic
  • Full-service clinic
  • Convenient online booking
  • Skilled doctors and staff

Cons

  • Inconsistent quotes
  • Limited parking space

Quick service

“My 18-year-old cat, Jasper, was in distress, and I called the clinic to find out if they could see him. They told me to bring him right away. We saw Dr. Mann. I was so impressed with her knowledge, care, and kindness. She was able to diagnose the issue very quickly and provide solutions. I cannot convey how much I appreciated this. I want to thank the team as well. Michelle was great and showed me how to treat him going forward. She was very thorough and answered all my questions. Savannah was also so helpful getting me in to see Dr. Mann so quickly.”

– Ms. Tara, Google Review

Fabulous experience

“I simply cannot say enough about our experience with this clinic! Dr. Dhillion was fabulous! We were looking for a place to bring our injured dog on the weekend, as our regular vet was closed. Our dog was in an altercation with a beaver, and he was treated effectively at an extremely reasonable monetary rate. I highly recommend this friendly, welcoming and professional clinic! We are now switching clinics for all of our animals’ care as a result!”
