Numbers are less daunting with the best math tutors in Edmonton!

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Experience: The team opted for centres or math tutors with nearly five years of experience effectively teaching math across different levels, as verified through CVs, company histories, teaching portfolios, and feedback.

Credentials: While a “tutoring” degree isn’t a strict requirement in Edmonton, we still opted for professionals who hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Math, Education, or a related field. Additional certifications mattered.

Communication Skills: Trial lessons, interviews, experience, and feedback were used to score a tutor’s ability to explain concepts or adapt explanations to a student’s understanding. Those who are known for making math fun and engaging scored higher.

Using the same methods (with the parents and guardians mostly involved), we graded their proactivity, transparency, response speed, and professionalism.

Patience: Students, parents, and guardians were interviewed to evaluate how well a tutor handles an individual’s pace or level without showing any signs of frustration. Tutors who practice positive reinforcement were favoured.

Pricing: Lastly, we paid special attention to decorated tutors with competitive hourly rates, particularly those regularly commended for improving a student’s understanding, perception of math, and, of course, grades.

My family is gifted in many areas, but math isn’t one of them. I had it rough, and so did my nieces, nephews, and their parents.

Notice how it’s in the past tense, though? Yep, while most of us still wrestle with equations, the improvement is noticeable.

The turning point was finding a quality math tutor. You clicked here, so you’re probably after the same results—good move. Below are some of Edmonton’s best at making the notoriously tough subject finally add up.

What’s the hourly rate of math tutors in Edmonton?

In Edmonton, the hourly rate of early-career tutors is usually $15–$25, more experienced or university-level ones charge between $30 and $40, and those with extra credentials or awards reach the $60 mark and beyond.

The price is generally shaped by the tutor’s credentials, the student’s grade level, the lesson format/length, and the delivery/class setup.

Mathnasium has glowing numbers. It has served as a math-dedicated centre for decades, and around 90% of the students improve grade-wise!

A huge part of the success is the Mathnasium Method. The tutors identify what a student knows and doesn’t know, building a customized learning plan from there.

What follows is a program centred on the student’s preferred learning style, be it tactile, mental, visual, verbal, or written.

It also helps that only qualified instructors get in. We heard the exam is quite difficult, and that passing isn’t enough, since candidates must have a knack for teaching math as well.

One downside is that it’s mostly geared toward K-12 students. Those in uni or college will find more suitable options below.

And you have to prep for the rates, especially those for private sessions. Mathnasium’s best tutors can set you back $150 an hour.

Pros

  • Open since 2002
  • Operates daily
  • Proprietary Mathnasium Method
  • Offers virtual, in-person, and private options
  • Welcoming and clean atmosphere

Cons

  • Can be pricey
  • Services are capped at K–12

Especially Kind

When my son started Grade 7 (he’s now in Grade 9), he realized he needed extra support in math to reach the same high grades he was achieving in his other subjects. Since joining Mathnasium, it has truly become like family for him. He enjoys going, the teachers are friendly, and the environment is positive and supportive. Dr. Shamir and Shina are especially kind, dedicated, and always helpful. I highly recommend Mathnasium Windermere to any parent who wants their child to build confidence, strengthen math skills, and fill any gaps along the way.

I’m grateful

Our kids have grown so

much in their Math skills since Mathnasium. They are more confident as the complexities of the subject increase. Sheena and Shamir have been instrumental in making that happen and for that, I’m grateful our kids were educated by their team!

2. Fundamentals First Learning Centre

Address: 4959 55 Ave NW

Contact Details: +1 587-937-7475

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Fri – 4 pm to 8 pm
  • Sat – 10:30 am to 3:30 pm

Website

Your child won’t get stuck in a rigid system at Fundamentals First. Despite their curriculum-aligned teaching, the students here receive a customized plan, often based on their strengths, gaps, and goals.

According to the parents we spoke with, the approach works. Many notice their kids doing better in class and actually enjoying the subject.

They usually credit the success to Tanu, saying the tutor’s interactive style and emphasis on confidence-boosting have resulted in drastic changes. No wonder most of her students keep coming back year after year.

Like the previous entry, however, Fundamentals First stops at 12th-grade students.

Can’t say their demand is low either. Signing early is smart, particularly for popular or limited programs like summer camps.

The good bit is that they can adjust schedules to avoid messing up your family’s lifestyle. Both in-person and online sessions are available, too, and they’re priced competitively.

Pros

  • Curriculum-aligned teaching
  • Flexible hours and setups
  • Welcoming environment
  • Reasonable pricing
  • Students tend to stay

Cons

  • Services are capped at K–12
  • High demand

A Positive Experience

A friend of mine came here a couple of years ago to upgrade their courses, and after hearing about their great experience, I decided to do the same. Especially with the teacher strike and being a diploma-writing student, I wanted to keep up at the same pace. I’m am so glad I did! Tanu has been amazing to work with. She’s incredibly patient, easygoing, and always motivates her students to achieve their goals. She also does a wonderful job of accommodating each student’s pace, making learning feel comfortable, personalized, and encouraging. I’ve had such a positive experience here and would highly recommend Tanu to anyone upgrading their courses or simply just needing a little extra help.

We’re thoroughly impressed with our tutor

Fundermantel Learning demonstrates exceptional expertise in matching children with tutors who align with their individual needs and personalities. When my daughter was in grade 2, I utilized their services, and by grade 5, she had made sufficient progress, eliminating the need for further assistance. However, now that she’s in grade 9, I re-enrolled her due to difficulties with her math teacher’s instructional approach, which led to her falling behind and experiencing decreased confidence and grades. We’re thoroughly impressed with our tutor, and our child finds the sessions enjoyable and interactive, leading to notable improvements in her confidence and academic achievement. She’s now confident going into exams. It’s been a great experience, and I highly recommend Fundermantel Learning.

The 1984-founded Oxford Learning remains a viable centre even if you’re in uni or college already. See, their programs cover every age group.

As for style, theirs is rooted in cognitive learning, which means students are taught how to process information instead of memorizing. It’s usually put into practice through active discussions, the use of visuals, and reflections on the learning experience.

To enhance its effectiveness, the centre employs its very own Dynamic Assessment, a set of interactive tests meant to identify two things: how a student thinks/learns and their current academic skills.

Does it work, though? Our interviewees claim it does. A common feedback is how students finally get tricky concepts after enrolling.

Unsurprisingly, Oxford Learning isn’t dirt-cheap. Certified tutors with bachelor’s or post-graduate degrees and low student-to-teacher ratios cost extra.

Classes also pause on Sundays, which might pose a problem for busier students in higher levels.

Pros

  • Open since 1984
  • Centred on cognitive learning
  • Employs the Dynamic Assessment method
  • Highly qualified tutors
  • Teaches all age groups

Cons

  • Can be pricey
  • No Sunday classes

Truly Incredible

My son has been attending Oxford for his tutoring sessions, and the improvement we’ve seen has been truly incredible. The teachers are patient, encouraging, and really know how to make learning fun and engaging for young children. What I appreciate most is how they focus not just on academics, but also on building confidence and a love for learning. My son always looks forward to his sessions, and we’ve noticed a big boost in his reading and math skills.

The instructors are professional

My son has been attending English classes at Oxford Learning Windermere for seven months and truly enjoys the lesson and learning environment. The instructors are professional, patient, and the lessons are engaging and well-structured. The centre provides regular progress reports to keep parents informed, and Shalini also takes the time to personally explain each student’s progress and areas for improvement. Over these months, we’ve seen great improvement in my son’s English skills and confidence. Thank you to the Oxford Learning Windermere team — highly recommended!

4. Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Edmonton

Address: 9819 Winterburn Rd NW

Contact Details: +1 587-686-3800

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – 10 am to 7 pm
  • Sat – 8 am to 12 pm

Website

Considered the globe’s largest after-school math program, Kumon’s inclusion here makes sense (they even made our recommended list of general tutoring services).

At the heart of their success is the Kumon Method. We’d describe it as incredibly structured, with self-learning and repetition as the focus.

In practice, students take a diagnostic test before answering daily worksheets that gradually increase in difficulty. The tutors only step in when needed.

And it’s effective. The crew met parents who appreciate the step-by-step approach and long-term benefits, with the usual payoff being stronger study habits.

That said, it’s not ideal for those who need traditional, structured instruction. Independent work is Kumon’s main thing.

Their pricing isn’t for everyone either. Per month, the starting fee is normally $180, and that’s not counting the $80 enrollment fee or the $30 materials fee.

But hey, you don’t have to pay for assessments or gas money. The program is home-friendly (though in-centre learning is offered as well).

Pros

  • Open since 1958
  • Promotes daily studying habits
  • Flexible setup
  • Free assessments
  • Personalised plans

Cons

  • Can be pricey
  • Minimal direct instruction

The teachers are friendly and patient

My family and I love this Kumon centre because it is clean, all kids get hand sanitizer as soon as they enter the centre. The teachers are friendly and patient with the kids. Sam leads by example and made us feel welcome during our assessment. He has positive interactions with the kids and jokes around with them. He is very involved with the kids learning. Indi at the reception is simply amazing and very knowledgeable with any questions. Keep up the good work.

Outstanding Learning Centre

Kumon Lewis Estate is truly an outstanding learning center. The staff here go above and beyond to ensure that every child receives personalized attention and guidance. Their focus on each student’s individual progress sets them apart, creating an environment where kids feel supported, motivated, and confident in their learning journey.

The structured approach helps children build strong foundations in math and reading, while also encouraging independence and discipline. Parents can see the difference in their child’s academic growth and self-confidence.

I highly recommend Kumon Lewis Estate to any family looking for a place that genuinely cares about each child’s success.

5. Tutor Teach

Contact Details: +1 877-495-9202

Operating Hours: Daily – 9 am to 9 pm

Website

For one-to-one sessions, Tutor Teach is one of Edmonton’s most successful names. The majority of their students have seen 10%–40% boosts in their averages.

What’s unique about them is the Mindful Match Precision Pairing System. To maximize results and build rapport fast, the centre accounts for the student’s personality, comprehension style, learning psychology, and language (need ESL training too?).

That’s one reason they scored high on our comms charts. Another is their quick email responses and how clearly they explain a child’s strengths and weaknesses to the parents.

Just watch out for scheduling hiccups, as not every tutor can fit you right in. Over 200 accredited teachers make up their staff, sure, but they bring in a crowd.

Longevity might also be a weak point for some. In this review, Tutor Teach is the only centre that’s not a decade-old.

But it’s one of the most affordable, with $25 as the starting rate.

Pros

  • Meticulous matching process
  • Teaches all age groups
  • Reasonable pricing
  • Responds to queries fast
  • Specializes in one-to-one sessions

Cons

  • Limited availability
  • Newest centre on this list

Fantastic Tutor

Dia is such a fantastic tutor. She helped my daughter excel in both math 20-1 and chemistry 20-1. Highly recommend! Easy to book sessions as well.

An Incredible Experience

We’ve had an incredible experience with Tutor Teach. Chelsea took the time to understand both my daughter’s academic needs and personality, and thoughtfully matched her with a tutor who truly connects with her. Jazlyn has been absolutely amazing! Not only have my daughter’s grades improved significantly, but her confidence in math has grown tremendously — even with the challenges of a learning disability. I can’t recommend Tutor Teach highly enough!
