Are you starting to get frustrated with your Internet connection and in desperate need of an upgrade? Today’s your lucky day, because we’re here to help you out!

We did thorough research and compiled this list of the best Internet services in Edmonton-based on their plans, services offered and connection reliability. Through this article, we hope you can find a company that suits your needs.

Of course, we’ll discuss the cost of a connection here before taking a look at the top Internet providers in the city. If you’re ready, let’s go ahead and get started.

How Much Do Internet Services Cost in Edmonton?

The average Canadian household can spend up to $200 each month on the Internet, which is made up of their mobile plans and Wi-Fi. With that in mind, each person roughly spends $50 each month just to stay connected to the Web.

An Internet speed of around 25Mbps used to be suitable for most families with four members – this allows them to simultaneously use all their devices without any noticeable lag. This can even include streaming or gaming on their mobiles.

However, according to our research, a speed of around 75Mbps is now preferred today, especially with the growing number of high definition content online.

We’ve compiled a list of the plans from the different Internet service providers featured in our article in the table below.

We included their cheapest and most expensive options, as well as the plans we’d recommend. Our recommendations are the ones with asterisks.

Telus is a global telecommunications leader and an award-winning company that delivers a variety of telecom services. They claim to have the fastest Internet connection speeds in the whole of Canada and say they’re up to nine times faster than the competition.

Offering 100% fiber-optic connections, their flagship Internet-only plans are aptly named Fast, Faster, and Fastest. They also offer other options, and if you’re not sure which one is right for you, you can always take their online quiz.

Their Fast plan has a download and upload speed of 75 Mbps, which can accommodate up to 10 devices. It’s priced at $85 per month for the first two years, which then goes at full price to $100 afterward.

In our opinion, however, the PureFibre Internet 300/300 seems like a better deal for the average Internet-savvy household.  At only $95 for the first two years and $120 monthly afterward, you get almost four times the bandwidth at 300Mbps for not much of a price difference.

The Faster and Fastest plans are better for an office setting and are only worth it if more than 10 devices are going to be used simultaneously.  Other reasons to get these are if somebody in your home is a hardcore gamer or one of you is a live streamer.

Now, if there are areas in your home that are out of reach from your Wi-Fi, Telus offers hardware boosters that can extend the range. You can get these on financed payments for only $5 a month, which can be added to your monthly bill for convenient payment.

So, once you’ve chosen your plan, you can expect up to 2 weeks to get an installation appointment, although sometimes you can get lucky and score one in a few days. For Internet-only, installation can take 1 to 2 hours and may take longer if you purchase one of their TV bundles.

Speaking of which, their Optik TV and Pik Tv packages can offer you multiple channels to stream and can even include a bundled device. Some of their deals include loaning you a 55-inch TV, Apple TV, or an iPad, which some may find appealing.

Now, if you decide Telus isn’t for you within their 30-day satisfaction guarantee, they’ll waive all fees. However, you’ll need to return any of their freebie products within 21 days.

If you cancel any time after the guarantee expires, you’ll be charged $15 for the remaining months in your contract. To make this clearer, if you have three months left until your contract ends, you’ll be charged $15 x 3 months – this equates to a total cancellation fee of $45.

So, unless you cancel within the first month of your contract we would suggest just waiting until it ends.

Nevertheless, we think that most users will be quite satisfied with their Internet connection because of its reliability and speeds. If you’re coming from a cable or DSL connection and find good Internet speeds crucial, Telus plans are well worth the expense.

  • 30-day satisfaction guarantee
  • Freebie devices with bundled plans
  • Discounted rates for first two years
  • Can build your own “bundle”

  • Charges cancellation fees after 30-days
  • Two year contracts for Internet plans
  • Only offers fibre Internet

Shaw Communications Inc. is one of the top Internet service providers in Edmonton, offering telephone, television, and Internet services. They were recently rated by PC Mag as the number one Internet service provider in Canada for gaming in 2021.

Their Fibre+ 25, 75, and 150 deals are tailored for students to help them continue with their studies. Students can even receive additional discounts if they sign up using their post-secondary school email address.

The Fibre+25 and 75 have data caps, though: 250GB and 500GB respectively. So, if you’re heavy into streaming services or gaming, these are not the plans for you.

Shaw does have plans that have unlimited usage, starting at their 150mbps plans upwards. Their most premium offering is the Fibre+ Gig 1.5, which gives users up to 1.5Gbps of download speeds at $165/month, although this is probably best suited for businesses.

In our opinion, the Fibre+ 150 plan offers the best deal for most people,  offering unlimited Internet usage at $90 a month. You’ll have up to 100mbps download speeds and 15mbps upload speeds with a 12-month price guarantee.

To boost their customer offerings even further, Shaw’s Our Home app lets you regulate Internet usage in your home, which is especially useful if you have children. You can pause Wi-Fi, set approved Internet schedules, and even activate safe browsing while your kids are online.

Confusingly though, they offer a separate app called My Shaw, which is just for managing your account and paying your bills. We think it would have been better to have bundled the two apps into one to avoid redundancy.

If you’re looking for a mobile LTE plan for your mobile, you can make the switch to Shaw as well, offering up to 25GB of LTE for only $25 a month. With each phone plan, you’ll get unlimited calls, texts, and can even automatically connect to any one of Shaw’s Wi-Fi hotspots around the country.

You can also bundle up everything you need into a neat and tiny package consisting of fiber Internet, mobile, and a TV!

Overall, Shaw is a pretty solid choice with a lot of offerings for just about everyone. With Shaw’s multiple bundles and affordable deals, it has earned its spot here as one of the best Internet service providers in Edmonton.

  • Gives students additional discounts
  • Good plan balance between download and upload speeds
  • Fast LTE coverage
  • Offers mobile, fibre and TV bundles

  • Data caps on student plans
  • Two separate apps to manage Wi-Fi and account

The AEBC Internet Corporation is another top Internet service provider that also offers TV packages and unlimited Internet usage for Edmontonians. It offers DSL, cable, and fiber Internet services.

If you need a quick setup that’s ready to use right away, AEBC offers cable Internet in Edmonton, with a total of five different plans to choose from.

The lowest plan is Cable Internet 25, which offers unlimited usage up to 25Mbps download speeds and 2.5Mbps upload speeds. Priced at $34.95 per month, this plan is more than enough for a family of 3 to 4 people who do average streaming, web browsing, and casual gaming.

The top plan on offer is Cable Internet 1000, priced significantly more at $94.95 monthly. However, you get a significant upgrade in speeds with 1000Mbps downloads and 25Mbps uploads, which makes it more than worth the extra money.

Do take note that the downside of cable connections is that speeds can fluctuate because you’re sharing bandwidth with other people on the same “cable” line. So, during peak hours, you can expect some slow down in speeds.

With that in mind, our opinion is that Cable Internet 75Mbps or 150Mbps hits the sweet spot as they offer enough cushion in their maximum speeds. This will come in handy for video conferencing, uploading large files, and playing games even during peak hours.

AEBC also offers fiber Internet plans, but there’s no guarantee that your particular area will be connected, so be prepared to wait or be disappointed. Regardless, you can still check out their plans that start at 25Mbps for $80 a month and go up to 1,000Mbps at $148 per month.

Take note that Fibre services need an additional $100 for activation and installation. A $100 modem deposit is also required, which will eventually be refunded when you terminate your contract with them.

While AEBC may not offer mobile or sim plans, they do have VoIP Phone, which lets you call long distances at affordable rates. They also offer TV packages that you can customize to your liking by either selecting channel packs or individually selecting each channel to create the perfect TV playlist.

  • Offers five different plans of cable Internet
  • Affordable rates
  • Cable Internet can be set up within the day

  • No mobile or sim plans
  • Fibre connection not guaranteed

5.   TekSavvy

Founded in 1998, TekSavvy is one of the fastest-growing businesses, according to the Canadian Business Magazine’s Profit 100 list. In the two decades that they’ve spent connecting people, they’ve received several awards and recognitions.

One thing that sets them apart is their 24/7 customer service – which can be a godsend to anybody who’s ever had unexpected Internet problems. This isn’t just chatting with an AI bot though, you’ll get live human help at any time of the day.

Now, TekSavvy is targeting the younger generation of users, offering unlimited usage with no caps and low latency, ultimately for the best gaming experience. With low response times and high speeds, it’s no wonder that they’ve quickly become one of the city’s sought-after Internet service providers.

They have three main fiber optic plans, cleverly named Good, Better, and Best. These offer download speeds of up to 15mbps, 75bmps, and 100mbps respectively, which is a good range of options to choose from.

While TekkSavvy offers fiber optic Internet, unfortunately, their network is still restricted to the Chatham-Kent Area where they are based. Edmonton users will have to settle for their Cable Internet Plans, which are actually quite enticing as well.

The starter cable plan has speeds of up to 5Mbps and costs $38.95 per month. It disappointingly has only a 0.5 Mbps upload speed and a data cap at 400GB… which in our opinion doesn’t make it any better than using LTE on your mobile phone.

The most expensive cable plan on the other hand is the Cable 750 Unlimited, which costs $119.95 per month. This plan offers something a whole lot better with up to 750Mbps download speeds and up to 20 Mbps upload speed.

However, among their cable plans, our opinion is that Cable 150 Unlimited is their best offer. It is the second most expensive but gives you 150mbps download speeds and 10mbps upload speeds.

Just like some of its competitors, you can opt to purchase or rent the modems and routers from Teksavvy.  What makes them different is that they offer second-hand “open box” hardware, that is cheaper than purchasing a brand new one but exhibits the same quality.

Although we’re a little disappointed that Teksavvy isn’t ready to lay down its fiber optic Internet in Edmonton just yet, their Cable Unlimited Plans offer quite a good deal. With large bandwidth and reliable connections, we think they’re still among the best Internet providers in Edmonton.

  • 24/7 Customer Service
  • Fair pricing for cable Internet plans
  • Can opt to purchase an open-box modem or router

  • No fibre connection in Edmonton
  • No mobile or sim plans

6.   Clearwave Broadband Networks

Founded in April 2003, Clearwave Broadband Networks is an Alberta Capital region ISP and networking services company offering the fastest wireless internet services anywhere in Alberta with substantial data usage limits.

We like them because residential plans have options suitable for just about anyone from 6 Mbps to 50 Mbps of consistently achievable speeds and we offer a faster upload speed than anyone for those customers utilizing cloud based services.

They also have commercial and Industrial internet solutions of 15 Mbps to 200 Mbps. This speed helps you operate at near symmetric bandwidth (where your upload speed equals your download speed) as businesses needing VPN tunnels or utilizing cloud based services need the upload capacity far more than residential based customers.

In addition to their internet service offerings for business/industrial customers, they also provide Video Surveillance and VoIP (SIP Trunking) services. Their territory continues to expand with 2 new tower sites expected this year (2020) in Parkland and Wetaskiwin Counties.

Lastly, they are privately owned and operated and an accredited member of the BBB.
