10 Board Game Cafes in Edmonton Where Checkmate Comes with Cheesecake

board-game-cafes-in-edmonton

Game night with friends sounds wholesome, until you’ve played the same old games one too many times. After a while, even the classics start to lose their spark (especially when you play them with the same people).

That’s why board game cafes are such a win. They let you dive into endless new games, tasty food, and fun atmosphere without the setup stress or snack prep.

If that sounds like you’re kind of hangout, you’re in the right place. We checked out some of Edmonton’s most talked-about board game cafes to find the best ones.

Here are the board game cafes in Edmonton that combine great food, cozy vibes, and a massive game library!

The Hexagon Board Game Cafe is one of those spots that’s easy to lose track of time in. You walk in and there’s this huge wall of games, everything from quick card games to heavier strategy ones that take a whole evening.

The staff, who call themselves Hexperts, are pretty helpful if you’re not sure what to pick or don’t feel like learning the rules on your own. They make the shelves a lot less overwhelming, especially if you’re new to board games.

Last time we went, we pulled out Azul and Splendor because they’re easy to get into. We also saw a group deep into Carcassonne that looked like they’d been at it for hours.

What we like is that you pay by the hour per person, so you don’t feel locked into staying all night if you just want to try a couple of games.

Pro tip:
Go in with a shortlist of games you want to try (watch a quick rules video ahead) so you don’t waste time figuring it out when you get there.

Table Top Cafe has more than 700 games in their library. Whether you’re in the mood for something light or ready to dive into a long strategy session, there’s always something worth pulling off the shelves.

On top of the games, they run event nights like drop-in gaming and puzzle swaps, which give the spot more of a community feel.

The last time we went, we grabbed Codenames to start since it’s easy to get everyone in the mood. We then switched to Ticket to Ride when we wanted something with a bit more strategy.

By the end of the night, someone convinced us to try Wavelength, and we ended up laughing way more than we expected.

Pro tip:
Check what event nights are on (Tuesday & Sundays often have drop-in) — good way to meet people and try games you wouldn’t normally pick.

Swirl is a mix of board game cafe and Pokémon shop, which makes it stand out right away.

They’ve got shelves of cards, booster packs, and all the accessories if you’re into collecting, plus league nights where people come to play. We like that their board game library is “pay what you can,” so it’s easy to try something new.

What also makes it fun is the menu. You can grab a latte or milkshake, but the swirl-in ice cream is the highlight. You get to add cereal, fruit, or cookie chunks. It feels playful, and it fits the overall vibe of the place.

Pro tip:
Try their themed drinks. Even if you’re not super into cards, the treats make the visit more fun.

Naked Cafe is a long-time community spot in Edmonton. It’s a part coffee shop, part live music venue, part hang-out space.

They have board games around, so you can grab a latte and chill with a game or two.

What’s unique is how it leans into art, local music, and inclusivity. There’s jazzed up decor, open mic and stage nights, sometimes even art shows. It gives the place more personality than a typical cafe.

The game selection isn’t massive or super curated like a board game specialty shop, but it’s decent for casual games and classics. Think chess, Scrabble, and a few party games you’ll probably recognize.

Pro tip:
Go on an open mic or music night if you can. The mood is better, and you’ll probably meet people who are into games too.

They’ve got a bunch of couches and tables, plus a chessboard and a few casual games. It’s a great place to hang out with friends over coffee or a craft beer.

What makes it stand out is the mix of cozy seating and the relaxed, friendly vibe. The board game selection isn’t massive, but chess and a few casual games are more than enough for a laid-back hangout.

Pro tip:
Check out their event board. They sometimes host live music or climbing community nights.

This place is great if you and your friends just want to hang out and play board games without any pressure. The games are on hanging shelves along the side, so you can grab one and start playing right away.

Last time we went, we grabbed Sorry! and Blokus from the shelves. Playing Sorry! Turned into a mix of friendly sabotage and laughter every time someone got sent back to start, while Blokus had us quietly plotting our moves and trying to block each other in.

We didn’t even notice the time passing because we were so caught up in the games.

The café itself is cozy and chill, with plenty of seating for a couple of hours of coffee and games.

Pro tip:
Hit up quieter hours if you want a table to yourself, and the staff are happy to suggest games if you’re stuck deciding.

We tried a round of Catan while we were there and got so into trading resources and building roads that we completely forgot about the snacks we brought along. The café’s relaxed vibe makes it easy to focus on the game and the people you’re with.

With both casual and strategy games available, it’s easy to find something that keeps everyone entertained. Kids and adults alike can settle in for a few hours of fun without feeling rushed.
